7 common mistakes women make during their period

Due to the shame or embarrassment associated with it, some women are unable to consult on the best practices for their health and well being during this time.

As a result, they often may do things that are harmful to them during their period.

Here are common mistakes women make during their period.

1. Failing to observe the blood

Colour and texture of the menstrual flow is a necessary indicator to the state of a woman’s health. The blood should be typically dark or bright red with occasional clotting.

Heavy clotting and orange discharge may be signs of an infection and further abnormalities should be checked by a doctor.

2. Using scented products

To mask the odour that may emanate during a woman’s period, some women find it necessary to wear fragrant pads or tampons. However, the scents may contain chemicals sensitive to the vagina. It’s recommended to shower more than once a day to help deal with odour.

3. Not keeping track of the cycle

Women should familiarize themselves with their cycle, flow, texture, types of cramps so as to know what to do should something be off kilter.

4. Taking painkillers after the cramps have started

Studies have shown that taking painkillers after the cramps have started is less effective in managing menstrual cramps.

5. Not taking enough iron

Blood loss can easily lead to an iron deficiency and failing to consume iron-rich foods can lead to lethargy and when ignored for long, even anaemia.

Ensure to replenish supply by eating lots of iron rich foods such as red meat, eggs, beans, and dark leafy greens like spinach.

6. Not changing frequently enough

The pads and tampons used are a haven for harmful micro-organisms to grow. Disposable pads and tampons should be changed after every three-four hours.

7. Taking too little water

Staying hydrated is necessary and even helps in relieving cramps. Consuming drinks such as caffeine is actually harmful as caffeine dehydrates and increases cramps.
