Shortly after Kunle Afolayan delved into fashion and released his Kunle Afolayan’s Kembe, many likened it to that of Mudi Africa’s Drop Crotch pants. And since then, some have been saying he stole the design from Mudi.
But in an exclusive chat with Saturday Beats, the filmmaker stated that he did not steal anyone’s idea. He said, “If you look at Mudi’s designs, you can compare it with mine and see the difference.
Richard Mofe-Damijo was one of the people who wore Mudi’s own and I can categorically tell you that RMD has bought more than 10 pairs of Kunle’s Kembe because it is different.
“Mudi did plain harem pants; I am doing a modernised Yoruba traditional kembe, using local fabrics so they are two different things.
Are you saying that the agbada that Ebuka Obi-Uchendu wore during Banky W’s wedding is not the normal agbada? Anybody can claim ownership to something as long as you can defend it and people also see the essence of it.”
