One Mrs. Shakirat Rasheed, a 41-year-old woman on Friday, has reportedly taken her own life in the Adeosun area of the Apete axis of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state.
According to a report by newsmen, Mrs. Rasheed hung herself after the failure of her friend to repay a loan that she took from a microfinance bank. Mrs. Rasheed had served as her friend’s guarantor to finance the loan.
The yet to be identified fried allegedly obtained the loan from popular microfinance bank LAPO.
The report has it that the late Rasheed had stood as a guarantor for her friend who had obtained a loan from the office of the microfinance bank at Awotan area of the city, the friend however disappeared after collecting the loan, leaving Mrs. Rasheed with no choice but to repay the loan in bits as her guarantor.
Sources confirmed that the unexpected loan “caused Mrs. Rasheed’s depression and she seemed unable to bear the problem any longer, especially when officials of the micro-finance bank reportedly called her on Friday to see them in their office.”
Detectives were led to the scene of the unfortunate incident by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Apete police station.
The DAILY POST reports stated that the family said they would have to perform certain rituals before they could detach the body of the late Mrs. Rasheed from the rope hanging on it from the ceiling.
The incident was confirmed by the Oyo state Commissioner of Police, Shina Olukolu.
He gave credence to the fact that the deceased committed suicide, according to preliminary investigations on the matter.
Mr. Olugbenga Fadeyi, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the State Police Command, as well made a confirmation of the incident as he spoke to men of the press on Saturday.
Fadeyi told newsman that more efforts are being made by the force to get more information about her death.
