Nigeria records 591 new COVID-19 cases, total rises to 39,539

Imo confirms first COVID-19 case

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 591 new cases of COVID-19 in the country, bringing the total number to 39,539.

The NCDC made the announcement on Friday via its Twitter handle.

“591 new cases of #COVID19Nigeria; Oyo-191 Lagos-168 FCT-61 Ondo-29 Osun-26 Ebonyi-24 Edo-23 Ogun-14 Rivers-13 Akwa Ibom-12 Kaduna-10 Katsina-6 Borno-4 Ekiti-3 Delta-3 Imo-3 Niger-1.”

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said no fewer than 10,000 health workers in the 40 countries battling the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in Africa are infected.

The organisation added that it a huge challenge for medical staff on the frontlines of the outbreak face.

“More than 10,000 health workers in the 40 countries which have reported on such infections have been infected with COVID-19 so far.

“This comes as COVID-19 cases in Africa appear to be gathering pace. There are now more than 750,000 cases, with over 15,000 deaths.

“Some countries are approaching a critical number of infections that can place stress on health systems and South Africa is now among the worst-hit countries in the world.”
