Police arrest man 47, for shooting mother and son over refusal to observe social distancing in Miami

Police in Miami have arrested a 47-year-old man for shooting at a mother and her son over refusal to observe ‘social distancing’ amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

WITHIN NIGERIA learnt that the man identified as Douglas Marks from Miami got upset and confronted the woman and her son in the lobby of the Crystal Beach Suites in Miami Beach on Monday evening.

According to the affidavit, Marks told Veronica Pena and her son who were visiting Miami Beach from New Mexico: ‘You aren’t social distancing.’

Douglas reportedly brought out a black firearm which he shot at them severally in the lobby after he asked them to leave the hotel.

It was also learnt that there was no casualty in the shooting but Douglas was arrested by Miami Beach police.

According to a witness who spoke to Local10 (name withheld), the suspect, Douglas tried to shoot the girl and the kid.’

Confessing to the shooting, the 47-year-old Douglas told detectives that he fired his weapon because he was being followed, and asked the front desk to call 911.

Local10 said Marks remained in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Tuesday night.

He faces several charges following the incident, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm in public.
