Trade dispute: Nigeria, Ghana officials meet in Abuja for resolution

Senior Ghanaian government officials led by Allan Kyeremanteng, Ghana’s minister for trade and industry, have arrived in Abuja to hold discussions with Nigerian officials in order to resolve trade dispute between the two countries.

Ferdinand Nwonye, spokesperson for the ministry of foreign affairs disclosed the new development on Thursday via a press statement in which the government declared readiness to hold talks with Ghanian authorities .

WITHIN NIGERIA learnt that the Nigerian delegation to the meeting was led by Adeniyi Adebayo, minister of industry, trade and investment. Other members of the Ghanaian delegation were Kojo Nkrumah, Ghanaian minister of information, and Mohammed Tijani, the country’s deputy minister of foreign affairs and regional integration.

Meanwhile, speaker of the house of representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, is currently in Ghana to review the crisis,  and  resolve the diplomatic row between Nigeria and Ghana over alleged maltreatment of Nigerian nationals in the country.

The leader of Nigerian traders in Ghana, Chief Chukwuemeka Nnaji, on Wednesday told the Speaker how Nigerian traders had been subjected to hardship by the Ghanaian authorities since 2007. Nnaji lamented that Nigerian traders had their businesses registered with appropriate agencies while they pay their taxes as and when due, yet they were still maltreated by the Ghanaian authorities.
