A report making rounds on social media suggests that armed bandits in some Northern part of Nigeria; mainly Katsina and Zamfara are demanding ‘harvest fees’ from farmers to allow them harvest their crops in peace.
According to a report by BBC Hausa, the farmers in Zamfara disclosed this information, calling for the government to swiftly intervene in order for them (farmers) to harvest their year’s worth.
Within Nigeria gathered that the farmers are forced to pay bandits to allow them access to their farms at the beginning of the planting season, and also in time of harvest. We learnt that the bandits demand as much as 900,000 Naira from farmers in certain villagers before they will allow them carry on harvesting.
Northern youths took to Twitter to complain about this while explaining that this is one of the reasons for the high cost of foodstuff in the markets.
