Amitolu Shittu, the Osun State commandant of the regional security network, Amotekun, has disclosed that the outfit would not tolerate indecent dressing and bastardising of Yoruba language by the youth when it begins full operation in March 2021.
Speaking at the recently held empowerment programme initiated by a member of the federal parliament, Lawrence Babatunde Ayeni (APC, Ilesha Constituency 1), Shittu said that although Nigeria’s constitution provides for individual freedom of association it did not provide youth to dress indecent or speak incorrect Yoruba language.
The Amotekun corps, which was established to help secure internal security across the six Southwest states, seems to have deviated from its main mandate.
Meanwhile, Nigerians have reacted to the statement made by Shittu, as they accuse the new security operative of trying to replicate the modus operandi of northern Hisbah police.

The branch of Amotekun that seems to be morphing into Hisbah is that of Osun State. The Governor, like Makinde of Oyo, needs to nip these potential excesses in the bud. It is time for Oyetola to take responsibility for the actions of the vigilante group and express it clearly.

1. I suspect Osun Amotekun leaning towards another Hisbah (moral police) is deliberate. Besides Amotekun in Oyo, other outfits (Ondo, Osun etc) don’t seem to be working, nor focused. It cud be a script written by the police & FG, to show us why “state police,” can/will be abused.

My own is that every region or ethnicity should push for greater autonomy. At least We now know that this centralized government can never work in a multi ethnic state like Nigeria.

2. Another angle could be the FG wants to entrench “widespread insecurity” in the SW. We all know most SW forests is home to bandits. Ondo Monarch was killed, Chief Olu Falae’s farm destroyed by Fulani herdsmen. Just like #EndSARS State Judicial Panels, FG wants Amotekun to fail.
