There was pandemonium in the Maitama area of Abuja, on Tuesday January 26, as one person reportedly died while several others were left injured after protesting members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria aka Shi’ites and officials of the Nigeria Police Force clashed in the FCT.
According to reports, the protest kicked off at the National Human Rights Commission junction in the Maitama area of Abuja, with members of the group chanting anti-government songs to demand the release of their leader, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Zeenat, from the Kaduna Correctional Centre.
WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that El-Zakzaky and his wife were both arrested in December 2015 after members of the movement clashed with the Nigerian Army in Zaria, Kaduna state.
Sahara Reporters reports that the police officers fired teargas to disperse the crowd and afterwards allegedly fired live bullets that killed one of the protesters.
