Following the announcement of the Metropolitan Police that a former deputy senate president, Ike Ekeremadu and his wife, Beatrice have been arrested over alleged slavery, child trafficking and harvesting of organs, a special investigation titled “Murder in Uyo: Who killed Hiny Umoren?” written by David Hundeyin which exposed trafficking linked to high profiles emerged on social media.
The ‘under-reported’ investigation which was published on April 29, 2021 explained how a 26 year-old lady identified as Hiny Umoren who recently completed her university programme despite losing both parents was raped, murdered and buried in shallow grave.
The report began to gain traction again on social media when David Hundeyin reminded his followers about his previous investigation, knocked those who discredited his revelation and promised to keep mute on Ekweremadu story until he is arraigned and the charge sheet is made public.
Recall that when the incident of Hiny Umoren initially occurred, there was little or no attention from security agencies. Following social media uproar and heavy campaign against the incident, the police in Akwa-Ibom investigated the matter which led to the arrest of primary suspect identified as Frank Uduak Ezekiel Akpan.
Barely 12 hours after the arrest, the police in Akwa Ibom police command rapidly announced that it had extracted a confession from Akpan, and even identified his motive – he was a serial rapist and serial killer acting alone.
A closer look into the investigation showed that the primary suspect, Frank Akpan could not have acted alone, and that the police might be involved in some kind of a cover up to protect powerful people potentially implicated.
It revealed that there were rumours swirling about Hiny’s family receiving death threats, and the suspect allegedly boasting about being well-connected.
Hundeyin via the investigation made two positions which are; Frank Akpan is being used to take the fall for much bigger fish involved in Hiny Umoren’s murder; and Frank Akpan is certainly the primary suspect and was directly involved in the murder, there are other participants in the murder still walking free, while the Akwa Ibom Police Command intentionally bungles what should be an open and shut investigation.
Tracing the incident from missing of Hiny Umoren to the posting of her number on Twitter with the hope that someone would assist in tracking down her friend’s location, Frank Akpan was revealed as the owner of the Airtel number who invited Hiny for the supposed interview. Truecaller revealed his name and its profile read ‘political’.
The report further proved that there are several other people involved in the tragic incident even though Frank Akpan was the main actor. It linked the incident to other people namely Francisca Bassey Akpan, Kufre Effiong – a senior civil servant in Niger Delta and also revealed the possibility of police cover-up through SP Samuel Ezeugo.
