Whenever you remember the lyrics of a song titled, ‘Legbegbe’, what comes to your head? It should definitely be a true life story which inspired a young producer fondly called Mr. Real who featured street-hop acts, Obadice, Idowest and Kelvin Chuks to producr a hit song ‘Legbegbe’.
The song dominated the airwaves with shaku-shaku dance in 2017. It went so viral that a particular lyric “Oya Eh Fun Wo LegbeGbe Gbe… Fun Won Je Bi Seun Egbegbe…” became a slang amongst gangsters, agberos including the classy ones used to describe shady persons or those who engage in shady deals such as pickpockets.
Truly, the song has a story. The story of a popular Nollywood film-maker, Oluwaseun Olajide Olasunkanmi popularly known as Seun Egbegbe who was arrested for stealing nine (9) iPhones in the Computer Village, Ikeja in Lagos State, Nigeria.
A check by WITHIN NIGERIA revealed that Seun Egbegbe once managed Fuji artistes, Wale Ayinde aka Tekoma and Wasiu Alabi aka Pasuma.
How Film-maker, Seun Egbegbe was arrested for allegedly stealing nine iPhones 6
On the 23rd of November, 2016, a mob accosted and beat up a Yoruba film-maker, Seun Egbegbe for allegedly stealing nine (9) iPhones at a shop in the Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos.
According to report, Egbegbe had gone to the shop around 10am on Tuesday and had told the sales boy he met in the shop that he wanted to buy some iPhones.
Egbegbe was said to have left the shop with the phones, telling the seller that he wanted to pick money from his jeep. Three other persons were allegedly inside the jeep.
He, however, reportedly attempted to leave in the waiting jeep without paying for the phones when the sales boy raised the alarm, drawing the attention of other traders in the area who stopped the vehicle and dragged Egbegbe out and beat him up.
Speaking on the incident, the film-maker told police officers investigating the matter that he had no intention to steal the phones but had stepped into his vehicle to pick some money when the sales boy raised the alarm.
It was learnt that he was eventually charged to Ikeja Magistrate’s Court over the iPhone theft.
How Film-maker, Seun Egbegbe was arrested for $60,000 fraud
A check by WITHIN NIGERIA revealed that the Yoruba film-maker, Seun Egbegbe was arrested and detained at Area H, Ogudu for allegedly defrauding some bureau de change operators of $60,000.
This happened barely two months after he was dragged out of car and beaten up by a mob for allegedly stealing nine (9) iPhones in the Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos State.
A statement released by the Lagos State Police Command over the incident reads as follow;
Today at about 1300hrs one Seun Karim aka Egbegbe and one Ayo Oyekan disguise as the MD of Gbagada general hospital and the other as a patient.
They lured one Alhaji Isa Adamu and Abdullahi Haruna both bureau de change members, from different location that they needed 9000dollars and 3000pounds.
The unsuspecting victims brought same to the suspects at the hospital where they collected the said amount and attempted to escape with the money.
The victims raised alarm and subsequently the suspect were arrested by the policemen attached to the hospital.
Further to the arrest of the fraudsters, many members of bureau de change are trooping to the office with similar complaint against the suspects.
Case is under investigation.
How Film-maker, Seun Egbegbe landed in prison
On the 12th of February, 2017, the Lagos State Police Command in Panti, Yaba, yesterday arraigned Olajide Oluwaseun Karrem, popularly known as Seun Egbegbe, before a Federal High Court in Lagos on 36 counts charge of fraudulent activities.
The charge sheet, filed before the court by Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Effiong Asuquo, head of SCIID’s legal department, alleged that the two suspected fraudsters defrauded numerous bureaux de change operators between 2016 and February 2, 2017 and the suspects stole funds worth N40.647 million, $29,800, and £4,815.
The first count of the arraignment reads, “that you Olajide Oluwaseun Kareem and Oyekan Ayomide, on or about 2nd February, 2017, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court by false pretense and with intent to defraud conspired among yourselves to obtain the sum of N2.450, 000 million; £3000 Pounds Sterling from one Alhaji Isa Adamu, and therefore committed an offence contrary to Section 8 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Related Offences, and punishable under the same Act).”
The presiding judge, Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo, ordered that the two accused persons be remanded in prison custody. He then adjourned the case till March 10, for trial.
Seun Egbegbe’s long road to freedom
After spending six years and eight months, a Yoruba film-maker and producer, Oluwaseun Olajide Olasunkanmi alias Seun Egbegbe has been convicted for fraud by a Federal High Court in Lagos.
Recall that Egbegbe was remanded on February 10, 2017, after allegedly obtaining money by false pretence from no fewer than 40 Bureaux De Change operators in different parts of Lagos for over a period of two years between 2015 and 2017.
According to reports, he was accused of swindling the BDC operators by claiming that he had naira to change into foreign currencies.
The ex-convict alongside one Oyekan Ayomide was first arraigned on February 10, 2017, before Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo, on 36 counts bordering on Advance Fee fraud.
Out of 44 count charges against him, Egbegbe was found guilty of only one count, Count 19 and was sentenced to seven years imprisonment.
However, the judge ordered Seun Egbegbe’s release because he had already served six years and eight months in detention.
Egbegbe, the ex-manager of Ebony Films Productions International who was arraigned by the police for alleged fraud involving N39m; $90,000 and £12,550, N39,098,100, respectively could not fulfil the bail conditions given to him by the judge for more than three years.
Justice Oguntoyinbo held that 43 of the 44 count charges crumbled because of lack of witnesses to substantiate their claims.
The judge also held that the prosecuting team failed in the responsibility to provide evidence to be backed with witnesses on Counts 4, 19 and 21.
The judge also said that police tampered with the money recovered from the suspects.
