  • Supreme Court nullifies PDP Ibadan convention

Supreme Court nullifies PDP Ibadan convention

The National Convention held by the Peoples Democratic Party in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025, has been annulled by the Supreme Court.

The court voided the convention while ruling on an appeal filed by a faction of the party led by former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, SAN.

In a split decision, three justices of the five-member panel of the apex court upheld the findings and verdict of the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal against the conduct of the convention.

Justice Stephen Adah, who delivered the lead judgment in appeal number SC/CV/164/2026, held that the appeal lacked merit

He stated the appellants violated a subsisting order of the Federal High Court restraining them from holding the planned convention.

The apex court consequently dismissed both the appeal and cross-appeals and ordered parties to bear their respective costs.

The apex court further concurred with the findings of the lower courts that the PDP faction abused court processes by allegedly obtaining a counter-order from a court of coordinate jurisdiction in Ibadan after an earlier restraining order had been issued by the Federal High Court.

Justice Adah stated that the lower courts were right in relying on Sections 221, 222 and 229 of the 1999 Constitution to hold that political parties must comply strictly with constitutional provisions, electoral regulations and valid court orders in the conduct of conventions and internal party affairs.

The appeal challenged the March 9 judgment of the Court of Appeal, which upheld the earlier decision of the Federal High Court nullifying the convention and restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognising its outcome.

The apex court had reserved judgment in the matter after hearing arguments on April 22.

Breaking: Nigerian Air Force bombs Borno–Yobe border market, kills over 50

At least fifty-six people have reportedly been killed in an ‘accidental airstrike’ carried out by the Nigerian Air Force on a weekly market in Nigeria’s North East state of Borno and Yobe.

Fourteen other persons have also been hospitalised after the tragic incident which occurred at Jilli Market on Saturday.

The market is along the border of Borno and Yobe states. It is sandwiched between the Gubio local government area in Borno and the Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe

The market was reportedly mistakenly bombed during an aerial bombardment targeting suspected Boko Haram insurgents.

Traders from surrounding communities, including Gubio, Chiweram, and Benisheikh in Borno State, as well as Gurokayeya and Geidam in Yobe State, usually thronged to the weekly market to carry out transactions.

According to Daily Trust, the fighter jet that carried out the operation was tracking a group of suspected insurgents who were at the market to collect levies from traders and receive supplies but the strike missed its intended target.

An eyewitness said the airstrikes happened at peak trading hours, adding that four fighter jets carried out the bombing.

The source disclosed that at least 56 people have been confirmed dead, while 14 others are receiving treatment at the Specialist Hospital in Geidam, Yobe State.

“The incident happened around 2:46 p.m. while business activities were ongoing. Four fighter jets carried out the attack, though the fourth jet was not clearly visible. We only heard the sound of explosions.

“I counted 56 corpses myself and helped rescue two injured people, taking them to the hospital. I believe the number of casualties may be higher, as more bodies are still being recovered,” the source said.

The councillor of Fichimaram Ward, Malam Lawan Zanna, confirmed the incident to newsmen, stating that about 20 people were currently receiving treatment at the Specialist Hospital in Geidam.

“The incident occurred at Jilli village’s weekly market under Fichimaram Ward in Geidam LGA. From the information available to us, it was an airstrike.

“When the jets launched their attack, people panicked and began to run, but the strikes continued. As we speak, over 30 people have been killed.

“More than 20 people were hospitalised in Geidam. Two were referred to the Teaching Hospital in Damaturu. Out of those receiving treatment, nine have died, bringing the death toll to over 30,” he said.

BREAKING: Abducted Kagara students reportedly released to Sheikh Gumi after meeting with Bandits

Some group of bandits in Niger State forests have listed their demands for peace deal during a reconciliation meeting with Islamic scholar, Sheik Ahmad Gumi.

Sheikh Gumi visited Tagina forest and met with bandits group leader, Dogo Gide and his fighters on Thursday for safe release of the abducted persons.

But the bandits didn’t allow their conversations recorded.

Gumi came under intense criticism last week after advocating for amnesty for the criminals carrying out kidnappings and banditry in the different parts of Northern Nigeria.

In a recent interview with BBC Hausa, Gumi indicted the Nigerian military in the violence crimes in the region. He said the bandits he met were willing to lay down their arms but that the military top brass were deliberately escalating the violence.

He said; “Everyone has witnessed it that we negotiated with these people and they promised to drop their weapons and stop these activities, and I even promised to meet the president about the matter. But why will the army bomb their place?”

But the military denied his claims.

His visit to Tagina forest came after kidnappers abducted students, staff and their families From the Government Science College Kagara in Niger State on Wednesday.

Multiple reports said gunmen started attacked the school around 2:00 am on Wednesday, beginning with sporadic gunshots. A students was killed during the attack.

Sources in the community disclosed that students have been taken to some undisclosed public health facilities for medical checkup in Minna, the state capital in order to ascertain their health status and treatment shortly after they were set free.

It was further learnt that the students gained their freedom after Sheikh Ahmad Gumi had met and dialogued with the leader of the bandits identified as Dogo Gide in conjunction with some of his members after what seems to be a long hours before the two parties could reach a truce.

The foremost Islamic scholar had earlier visited the Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello at the Government House in Minna, some few hours after the incident had occurred on Wednesday and held a closed-door meeting with the governor in his office, alongside members of his entourage.

Recall that the State Governor Abubakar Sani Bello while reacting to the incident vowed never to negotiate with bandits.

Bello stated that Niger was experiencing infiltration of criminals from neighbouring Benin Republic, adding: “The bandits are Fulani that has no one to control them, even their parents.”

Reiterating that he would not have anything to do with hoodlums who have never kept to terms of the agreement, the governor recalled that he once reluctantly negotiated with bandits that never yielded any positive result.

“To be honest, even when the process of negotiation was being advised, I agreed to it. I have attended one meeting where the bandits were there and I cannot imagine myself as a governor and chief security officer of a state sitting down and negotiating with them,” Bello said.
