Oga Bello: Biography of Adebayo Salami, Veteran Actor & Father of 18 Who Built a Nollywood Legacy

Adebayo Salami, popularly known as Oga Bello, is a legendary Nigerian actor, filmmaker, producer, and director, and a pillar of the Yoruba film industry for over six decades. He began his career on stage in 1964 with the Young Concert Party, earning recognition as one of Nollywood’s most iconic figures.

    EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

    Adebayo Salami Oga Bello

Adebayo Salami, popularly known as Oga Bello, was born on May 9, 1953, in Lagos, Nigeria, into an Islamic family of Kwara origin, with roots in Pakata Oloje, Ilorin. Although he hails from Kwara State, he was born and raised in Lagos, where he spent his formative years and received his early education.

Growing up, Salami developed an interest in acting after watching a television programme titled Village Doctor, which inspired his passion for the craft at a young age.

For his education, Salami attended Ansar-ud-Deen Primary School in Oke-Ejigbo, Lagos, before proceeding to Adebodun Commercial School for his secondary education. He later refined his acting skills at the Lagos Drama School, an institution affiliated with the University of Lagos. Having experienced limited parental support for his own educational pursuits, he has often emphasized the importance of formal education, ensuring that his children were well educated before venturing into acting.

    CAREER

    Adebayo Salami Oga Bello

Adebayo Salami began his acting career as a student in 1964 at just 12 years old. He joined the Young Concert Party under the leadership of Ojo Ladipo (Baba Mero). The troupe later evolved into the Ojo Ladipo Theatre Group and eventually the Awada Kerikeri Theatre Group, a transition that shaped the foundation of his career in traditional Yoruba travelling theatre. His decision to pursue acting was initially met with strong resistance from his parents, who were opposed to the career path and even threatened to curse him. This led him to briefly leave home and stay with a friend before he was eventually reconciled with his family.

His rise to prominence came after the death of Baba Mero in 1978, when he assumed leadership of the theatre group, a move that thrust him into the spotlight and established him as a key figure in the Yoruba theatre scene. By this time, he had already begun sharing stages with notable contemporaries and industry pioneers, including Adeyemi Afolayan, with whom he featured in early productions. He also appeared in Ajani Ogun, regarded as one of the earliest Yoruba-language films, and featured in other works such as Kadara. His performance in the popular NTA comedy series Comedy Half-Hour further cemented his fame and earned him the enduring nickname “Oga Bello.”

Transitioning into filmmaking, Salami produced his first movie, Ogun Ajaye, in 1985 under the Awada Kerikeri banner, marking the beginning of a prolific production career. He went on to produce several notable films on celluloid, including Omo Orukan (1987) and Eri Okan (1989). Although initially reluctant to embrace the home video era due to concerns about its global acceptance, he eventually adapted to the changing landscape of the Nigerian film industry as economic realities and limited production infrastructure made traditional filmmaking increasingly difficult.

Over the decades, he has remained a consistent force in Nollywood, with a career spanning more than 60 years across stage, film, and television. His filmography includes appearances in major productions such as Omo Ghetto: The Saga and Aníkúlápó, reflecting his ability to evolve with the industry while maintaining his legacy as one of the pioneers of Yoruba cinema. In addition to his creative work, he was also a pioneer member of the Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners and later served as its president, further contributing to the growth and structure of the industry.

  • My biggest fear is to die before my 104-year-old mother – Oga Bello

My biggest fear is to die before my 104-year-old mother – Oga Bello

Adebayo Salami, popularly known as Oga Bello, has a major fear – he doesn’t want his 104-year-old mother to bury him.

The actor, who recently clocked 67, admitted that God had been merciful to him. He stated, “I thank Allah for what he has done in my life. I am fulfilled at 67, but one of those things I still pray to God for is that I don’ want to die before my mother. I want to be the one to bury her by His grace. I also want good health and long life. Apart from all this, I am satisfied. I am still relevant in my industry. I am contented financially and my children are doing well.”

The actor also stated that people didn’t die at a young age in his family. He said, “My mother is 104 years old, while my father died in 2004 at the age of 102. We live long in my family. However, you cannot compare how they lived in the past with how we live now. I am still very young, though I don’t want to get too old before I die.”

Reacting to being called ‘old school’, Oga Bello said, “Young actors, who think I am outdated, are making a big mistake. If we didn’t pave the way for them, they would not be where they are today. Also, they shouldn’t forget they will grow old someday too. A young person cannot act the role of an old man. I have played the role of a lover boy in the past and I graduated into other roles. I just came back from a location a few days ago and I was given a role that suited my age. These young ones have not even met the standards we set. I don’t want to be stagnant in life. Even when I was young, I didn’t enjoy as I do now.”

Why I slapped my father — Actor Femi Adebayo

Popular Actor, Femi Adebayo, has explained that being an actor has made him do some terrible things such as slapping his father, Adebayo Salami, aka Oga Bello.

While speaking with Sunday Scoop, he said as an actor, one must be ready to do anything to play unbelievable roles. He stated, “I have been presented with scripts where I had to slap my father on set and I must do it as an actor. He has slapped me on set too countless times.

    Femi Adebayo

The moment we are acting, I don’t see him as my father anymore; I see him as a colleague and we need to interpret our roles very well. He trained me and he is my boss in the industry. He has taught me not to fear whenever I come across a bigger actor or someone like him on set. But the moment the director says stop, I prostrate to him and apologise.”

Similarly, he said he and his father decided to support Jigan with their viral ‘Sho Mo Age Mi Ni’ skit on Instagram. He said, “Jigan is more like a boy to us. When he came out with the trend, we felt we could do a skit to endorse it. The irony was in asking my biological father if he knew my age.”

    Femi Adebayo

Adebayo, who recently featured in an English movie, The Island, insisted that he had no regrets being a Yoruba actor. He said, “The only difference between an English and Yoruba movie is the language but the reaction as well as interpretation, most times, are the same. Given another chance, I would still prefer to come into the industry as a Yoruba actor because it has made me know my culture. All my days in school, I was taught a foreign culture and language. Later, I had the opportunity of learning about my culture, which I would not have learnt if I had started as an English actor. Majority of the people who started with English movies don’t have the opportunity I have had.”

He, however, admitted that there was no way Yoruba actors would earn more than English actors.Adebayo said, “English is a general language and it is universally accepted, unlike the Yoruba language. We cannot expect a Yoruba movie to have the same audience as an English movie.

The majority of Yoruba movies’ fans are Yoruba people. Based on this, English movies make more money because it has a wider market. But I don’t regret being a Yoruba actor. We have many Yoruba actors who are very comfortable and Yoruba actors are better appreciated outside their environment than English actors. We get more accolades from our fans.”
