    • Nigerians abandon their cars, resort to motorbikes as price hike bites harder
    • PENGASSAN, NUPENG express worry as fuel consumption drops significantly

This is certainly not the best of time for both commercial and private vehicle owners in Nigeria as the high cost of petrol has literally fuelled the skyrocketing cost of living in the country.

Recall that on May 29, 2023, the new Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during his swearing-in speech removed fuel subsidy, thereby throwing the entire country’s economy into hyperinflation. Since then, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd, has consistently continued to make an upward adjustment in the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit, PMS popularly known as petrol.

However, WITHIN NIGERIA gathered that most vehicle owners have resorted to use of motorbike instead of car due largely to the high cost of petrol. In the same vein, most parents have also adopted cost-effective method of transportation on their children who go to far-from-home schools, during the resumption of the 2024/2025 academic year in September 2024.

Such parents have changed their children’s schools to near-home schools to save cost of transportation which has doubled in recent time.

In any case, when our reporter visited Nsukka mechanic village, Enugu state on Saturday, most of the car repairers were seen idling away their time.

One of them, Mr. Frederick Ujah who spoke to our reporter lamented low level of work in recent time.

“Since this year, I have not seen this kind of hardship in my life. I have been in this work for close to twelve years but I have not experienced this kind of low patronage of business in my life.”

Lamenting further, Mr. Ujah told WITHIN NIGERIA that “imagine a situation whereby so many car owners abandon their car for motorbike. Some of them even abandon their cars in my workshop, telling me that they cannot maintain those cars. This is because their spare parts are now out of reach just as petroleum price has skyrocketed.”

Abandoned cars at the mechanic village, Nsukka

In any case, our reporter visited a spare parts dealer at Nsukka market village, it was discovered that none of the spare parts has a specific price tag. One of the dealers who spoke to WITHIN NIGERIA explained that “right now, all these spare parts have no price. Before we tell you the price, we must consult our supplier or suppliers in Nnewi or Onitsha to tell us the current price. We don’t just sell goods like that so as to avoid selling before cost price.”

Explaining further, the dealer narrated that “price changes every hour these days. For instance, you can buy something at N5,000 this afternoon, but before 5pm, the price has changed to say N5300. It keeps on changing like that every day. The worst is that there is no hope of the situation getting better. We are living in a situation of uncertainty. You may sell an item at say N20,000 today. When you want to buy it back by next, the price will be N22,000. So, this is the situation in which we have unfortunately found ourselves in.”

By and large, another seller told our reporter that “right now, we are confused as to either to sell our wares or to wait a bit before selling them. This is because when you finish selling your wares say at N15,000 each, you can never buy them at N17,000. This has been the lot of Nigerians for months now.”

    Petroleum sellers experience low sale

In November 2024, it was reported that the latest data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMPDRA) put nationwide fuel consumption at 4.5 million litres per day in August 2024.

The figure represents a significant drop from 60 million litres per day in May 2023, a staggering 92% decline.

According to the data, only 16 out of the 36 states received fuel from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited in August, leading to widespread shortage.

The report further explained that fuel prices have been rising at an exponential rate since President Bola Tinubu came to office in 2023.

The continuous price increases have further stifled the already battered economy, driving up the cost of food and transportation, and fuelling inflation to a three-decade high.

The situation has plunged many Nigerians into chronic hardship as lamentation becomes the order of the day.

However, a report by a French news agency also detailed how Nigerians have been forced to abandon their vehicles, opting instead for public transportation as the hardship permeates every strata of the nation.

    Oil marketers raise the alarm

The national leadership of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) lamented that the drop in petrol consumption had caused its members huge losses, adding that 10,000 of them were on the verge of closing shop.

The PETROAN National Public Relations Officer, Dr Joseph Obele, said the cost of loading a truck of fuel had risen from ₦7m to ₦47m in the last 16 months.

“Three days ago, there was a meeting at the national headquarters of PETROAN. At the meeting, there was, an indication that about 10,000 of our members would quit the business in the next 45 days because their trading capital had been severely affected,” Obele told newsmen.

    Tinubu: President of Nigeria

He also warned of the potential job losses as the affected marketers had a combined total staff strength of about one million.

“That was why we wrote a letter to Mr President, dated October 21, requesting a grant of N100bn to save the affected marketers’ businesses from shutting down in the next few weeks,” the PETROAN spokesman added.

For his part, the President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Abubakar Maigandi, also confirmed the massive reduction in fuel consumption, adding that members of the union were equally affected.

“There is a drop in consumption and the price of a truckload is higher now. So, we have reduced the quantity of fuel we buy. For instance, someone who bought 10 trucks before can only buy eight now. So, we haven’t been getting the right quantity that we are supposed to get. We sell only the little quantities we get,” he said.

PENGASSAN reacts to the ugly situation

Meanwhile, the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (PENGASSAN) stated that the inability of the oil marketers to buy products had resulted in job losses for truck drivers and petrol station workers in the country.

“The economy is not smiling at all. Many petrol station owners cannot even buy a single truckload, and this has affected our members. Those of them that are truck drivers hardly get loads to carry anymore. Many petrol stations have closed down and our members who are petrol station workers have lost their jobs,” NUPENG Secretary-General, Afolabi Olawale told the platform.

Asked to state the actual number of NUPENG members affected, Olawale said, “This is an unfolding situation. It’s evolving, so I may not be able to give you the actual number of people affected now because we have those in the informal and formal sectors. We have people in the upstream, downstream, and midstream. But I don’t have the statistics right here with me to give you.

“Though everybody is affected, those in the downstream are the most affected. It affects those in the downstream sector directly because they are truck drivers, station workers, and the representatives of the marketers at different depots.”

How Tinubu gave me N2 million to fuel my car in 2009, Sunday Igboho opens up

Chief Sunday Adeyemo alias Sunday Igboho, the popular Yoruba activist who gave eviction notice to Fulani herder to vacate the West, has revealed that former Governor of Lagos state and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, once gave him N2 million to fuel his car.

This is coming after special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on political matters, Babafemi Ojudu, made some revelations about Igboho’s meeting with Tinubu.

Reacting to the claims by Ojudu, the activist said he met Tinubu at his Bourdillion home in Lagos after he (Tinubu) invited him to seek his support against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2009 Ondo election.

Sunday Igboho also revealed that the former Governor of Lagos state gave him N2 million to fuel his car when he was departing, and he never met him again after that.

    He said;

“When I was hustling I had a company for about fifteen years ago, a company that sells cars. I started buying cars from Cotonou, then started buying from Germany, America, London; I travelled around to bring them.

“Any politician that said he gave me money should come out and swear with his child.

“Tinubu is alive, ask him if I collected money from him. Yes, I have seen him before. It was the time to vote for Mimiko in Ondo. I supported Mimiko’s opponent and they called senator Ladoja. Ladajo called me and said Tinubu wanted to see me and I should do whatever he wants.

“My number was given to Tinubu and he called me. I went to see him in Bourdillon. He asked me if Ladoja has explained the election in Ondo to me. He said he hoped I was aware of how much people had suffered under PDP’s administration in the state.

“And he told me that the election in Ondo, if Ladoja has explained to me, I should not support PDP and that they need to suffer for how they treated the people. And I told him whatever he wants and I left.

“To be sincere, he gave me N2million to buy fuel [for] my car. You can interview and ask him. He said if I love Ladoja, I should know how much PDP dealt with us, so I should leave the party. We had left PDP then, to Accord party.”

“I was invited to buy a car in Osun” Ex-banker arrested for robbery denies involvement

After being apprehended for robbery, a former bank employee has denied involvement.

Following his arrest last Thursday, Jan 14, on the Osu/Ile-Ife Expressway, 38 years old Moses Keffi, said he was invited by a friend, simply identified as “Ibadan”, to Osun State to buy a car only to be caught up during the arrest.

Keffi and two others named Odeyemi Oluwafemi and Isah Lawal were arrested and accused of hijacking two trucks at gunpoint.

One of the trucks was loaded with toiletries and the other was loaded with empty sacks of cocoa beans.

While being paraded with the two other suspects, Keffi, who lost his job in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic said he has been into business since then and that’s what took him to Osun.

He said his friend “Ibadan” invited him from Lagos to check a vehicle he wanted him to buy in Lagere, Ile-Ife, last week Monday, Jan 11, Punch reports.

Keffi said: “I left Lagos on Wednesday around 4pm and got to Osun State very late. When I got to Lagere, I called but Ibadan said he was no longer in Lagere and said he would call a driver to bring me to where he was.

“After about 40 minutes, a vehicle came to pick me. Ibadan was communicating with me with the driver’s phone. I was taken to where Ibadan was waiting and I saw two trucks. He said I should check and choose the one I wanted to buy. But I told him I wanted to buy a car and not a truck.

“He said I should get into the truck. While that was going on, I saw police vehicles come to the scene and I fled into the bush. I was later arrested by the police.”

But the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mr Wale Olokode said: “On January 14, 2021 around 4am, a gang of robbers fully armed with guns and other weapons invaded the Osu/lle-lfe Expressway and attacked innocent motorists plying the road and hijacked at gunpoint two trucks.

“One of the trucks, an Iveco with number plate DTM 19 AX, was loaded with toiletries worth millions of naira, and one DAF 75 truck with number plate JJI 445 XT loaded with empty sacks of cocoa beans were attacked by the suspects.

“The victims were also robbed of their valuables such as mobile phones and the sum of N130,000.

Actress, Peju Johnson speaks on how she bought her car

Fast rising Nollywood actress, Peju Johnson has revealed how she got her latest car; a Toyota Venza.

In an interview with Saturday Beats, the role interpreter stated that aside from acting, she was involved in other businesses and was not concerned about whatever opinions were expressed about the source of the car.

She said, “I bought the car with my hard-earned money. I actually paid for it in early 2020 but because of the Covid-19 pandemic, it could not be shipped to Nigeria until recently.

“People are entitled to their opinions. They are free to say whatever they like. I have found that people who don’t even know one are the ones that usually have the most to say about one. I am used to it and I don’t consider it to be a big deal anymore.

“Many actresses do more than acting. Many of them are influencers on social media and they have other businesses. Whenever they are contracted to represent any brand, they are well paid for it. I am an influencer and I also have other businesses. I sell female items. I don’t know much about male actors but I don’t think many of them do ‘influencer jobs’. I have read many comments on this issue online but I really don’t know why that is so. I only gave my perspective.”

Johnson also noted that she had heard that many actresses joined the industry just to have fame and meet wealthy men in society. She said, “I have heard a lot of that. We (actresses) joined the industry for different reasons. It is true that many ladies join the industry for the reason you stated. As for me, I have passion for acting and that is why I’m in the industry.”

The actress also admitted that some top personalities often got her number and called her for relationships. She said, “I get lots of them. It got to a point that I issued a stern warning to the people close to me about it. I told them not to give anybody my number without my permission”

On whether her light skin had been an advantage to her career, the busty actress said, “I am not sure it has. There are many actresses who are not fair-skinned, yet are doing very well in their careers. There are men who prefer dark-skinned women. I am naturally light complexioned; I did not alter my skin for the sake of any man.”

Asked what her favourite part of her body was, Johnson said, “I love all parts of my body but if I have to choose, I would say my face.”

The actress, who stated that she would be starting work on her first movie production this year in February, also noted that she would love to see a change in the way up-and-coming actors are treated in the industry. She said, “I would like to see a change in the way up-and-coming actors are treated. Many times, they are not paid, and I don’t think that is good enough.”

  • Robbers Kill Lagos Uber Driver, Steal Car

Robbers Kill Lagos Uber Driver, Steal Car

A ma simply identified as Tade, a driver of a ride-hailing service, has recently lost his life to armed robbers, who shot him dead around Badore in the Ajah area of Lagos State.

According to a report by PUNCH Metro, a yet-to-be-identified customer requested Tade’s service to convey him to a destination in the state and he drove down to the agreed pick-up point in Badore.

It was learnt that immediately he got to the destination, three armed men waylaid him and while attempting to dispossess him of the car and other valuables, they allegedly shot him twice.

After perpetrating the crime, the armed robbers reportedly fled from the scene in Tade’s vehicle.
The deceased’s colleague, who gave his name simply as Damilare, said Tade was tricked to the spot where he was shot dead, adding that three hoodlums were responsible for the attack.

Damilare stated, “He (Tade) was actually killed around Badore. His service was requested and when he got to where the request emanated from, he met three hoodlums. Immediately, he started struggling with them, not knowing that one of them had a gun, and they shot him twice and drove away in the car.

“From what we gathered, it appears that the hoodlums requested for his service in a bid to steal his car. That is the trick they usually use; they will make a request for a long distance travel like from Egbeda to Lekki and no driver will see such a request around 7pm or 8pm and won’t want to go, because it is going to fetch you over N5,000.

“But while driving to the pick-up point, they will ask you to pass through bad roads and when you get there, you will see like three guys with guns, cutlasses and knives, who will suddenly appear to rob you of your phone, money and other valuables.

“They know that most ride-hailing drivers use smartphones to work and some of them have more than one smartphones. This is common around Egbeda; if we get a request around there, we usually tell the person to come out and if the person refuses, we will cancel it. Many of the drivers don’t know this trick and that is why they usually fall victim.”

Damilare stated that Tade’s family had taken his corpse to the village for burial, adding that people, who rushed to rescue him after he was shot, informed one of his colleagues about what happened.

He said, “I cannot take a trip to Badore anytime from 6pm; if I am to take the trip, I will drop the passenger at Ajah or at the point where I can make the next U-turn. If you like to remain in the car, I will lock my car and keep you there. The area is very bad and cursed.

PHOTOS: Man Who Trekked For Buhari’s Victory Gets A Car, N2m After Five Years

50-year-old Dahiru Buba, who trekked from Gombe to Abuja in celebration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s electoral victory in 2015, has received a car and cash gift of N2 million from the Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya.

Buba who was reported to have developed limb pains from the solidarity walk he undertook in 2015 had called on the government and others to come to his aid.

Governor Yahaya’s media aide, Ismaila Misilli who announced the cash and car gift in a statement, noted that Buba was taken to the Government House clinic for diagnosis from where he was referred to a private orthopedic hospital where he was examined and placed on medication.
