    Delta govt approves N16bn for bridge, road projects

    One month after the Delta Government approved the construction and rehabilitation of 14 road projects across the state, no fewer than 15 others have again been approved at a cost of about N16 billion.

    The new projects include the construction of a bridge across River Ethiope in Umusume Quarters, Obiaruku; internal roads in Okpara-inland; Ituru Road, Elume; Deghele-Bateren Township road in Warri South-West.

    Others are construction of Oporoza Township Roads in Gbaramatu and Ogbe-Ijoh internal roads in Ogbe-Ijoh, both in Warri South-West and Dantinajo Gold Resort Road, Oleh, Isoko South, Obi-Ibabu/Ibabu road in Ndokwa West; rehabilitation and expansion of Old Lagos By-Pass (linking Benin/Asaba Expressway to Asaba/Okpanam Road) as well as construction of critical adjoining roads and discharge channel, Okpanam, Oshimili North, were approved by the council.

    The construction of Isoko drive/Sir Eric Obiazi street, Madagwa Street/Amantu Crescent, GRA Phase 5, Asaba, Oshimili South and construction of Flood Control Measures on Summit Road through Nwelih Street, St. Patrick’s College, West-End Mixed Secondary School and Uche Medua Ige Close were approved in addition to the reconstruction of Iregwa/Baleke and adjoining streets in Agbor, Ika South; reconstruction and overlay of Owerre-Olubo/Ute-Ogbeje road, Ika North-East.

    Disclosing this after the state executive council meeting in Asaba weekend, the Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, said that the roads spread across the three senatorial districts for fairness and equity.

    According to him, the government had approved comprehensive upgrade of facilities in Central Hospitals in Kwale, Ughelli, Oleh, Agbor, Warri and Sapele.

    He disclosed that approval was also given for Delta Cares Programme, a partnership programme with the World Bank, to resuscitate small and micro businesses affected by the effects of COVID-19 pandemic.

    Two lovers found dead in their apartment in Delta

    Two lovers identified as Ufuoma Atidja and Matilda Aghotor have been found dead in their apartment along NDDC road in Amukpe, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State.

    Their dead bodies were discovered on Saturday morning, February 13, after neighbours peeped through the window. The man was allegedly found on the floor and the woman on the bed.

    A source who pleaded anonymity told The Nation that the lovers attended a party the previous night.

    “They came home late after the party and slept off yesterday, only to wake up this morning and we found them dead.” the source said.

    According to the source, Ufuoma and Matilda had just returned to the country last year from an undisclosed overseas’ country and had reportedly moved into the vicinity last December.

    “He occasionally uses his vehicle to shuttle between Sapele and Warri route, and he was a lively fellow who was always visible and when neighbours woke up that morning and noticed his vehicle was there and there was no sign of the wife and him, we became worried, his window was opened but when we noticed his door was locked inside, we became curious, that was when we looked through the windows and saw the dead bodies.” the source added.

    However, another source said that their deaths may have been as a result of inhaling generator fumes.

    “Their generator was put on yesterday when they came back and we are suspecting it must have been the cause of their death.”

    Spokesperson of the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onowakpoyeya has confirmed the incident.

    “When the police visited the venue, they prevented us from going in, so the case was not officially reported” she said.

    Woman seeks to empower young man beaten to pulp for stealing clothes in Delta

    A young man identified as Stanley Kolokolo who was brutally beaten for reportedly stealing in Delta state has been found after a woman searched him out to empower him.

    According to reports, Stanley Kolokolo stole clothes from a shop located at cemetary road in Sapele last week.

    He was caught and beaten mercilessly by the shop owner and other people. During interrogation, he claimed that he was sent by some street boys to steal clothes for them.

    After the video of the boy in a pathetic condition following the beating he received was posted online, A Facebook user, Kate Keke was moved and decided to help him.

    “Sometimes our situation leads us to do things that are not right. We would like to empower him. Please help us get this boy.” she said.

    The boy was finally located by Sapele Times and his photo shared yesterday on Facebook.

    “We just won inform una say, the boy wey we dey find, we done finally see am.
    He name na stanley kolokolo and na urban area he dey stay.
    By the grace of God, the NGO and good samaritan wey won help and empower am, go visit am soon. Abeg, make we all commont hand from bad thing, if you nor get, try ask from your neighbors, don’t steal to avoid shame and disgrace.     Delta gang kills two female final year students, motorcyclist

    Following a ghastly accident that occurred along  Asaba-Ibusa Expressway, Delta State, two yet-to-be-identified undergraduates of the Delta State Polytechnic and a motorcyclist have lost their lives.

    Tragedy struck when the undergraduates were said to be on their way to a destination in the state.

    A source told news correspondent that a motorcycle carrying one of the undergraduates collided with a Lexus 330 salon car belonging to a suspected fraudster.

    The suspect, his friends, including an undergraduate who sat on top of the vehicle, were reportedly spraying money while the vehicle was in motion.

    “The motorcyclist was trying to pick some of the money that the Yahoo boys were spraying into the air when he lost grip of his motorcycle and collided with the car.

    “The motorcyclist died on the spot, while the girl he was conveying died on the way to a hospital. The lady who sat on the car fell and was crushed by another vehicle,” the source added.

    Several attempts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, proved abortive, as calls put across to her phone were not responded to.

    Man arrested for stealing underwear in Delta

    The police in Delta state has apprehended a 40-year-old man, identified simply as Mathew, for allegedly stealing the underwear of a man, Mr Victor Odiachi, and his wife at a guesthouse in Delta State.

    Newsmen gathered that the suspect came to the guesthouse on Monday around 9pm in crutches for medical treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, and was given a room on the ground floor due to his health condition.

    A source said, “The proprietor of the guesthouse got up around 3am to collect his phones in the sitting room but observed that the two phones were switched off. That prompted him to go to the flower vase, where he usually kept his car key, only to discover that the key was not there.

    “He and his wife entered the room where the suspect lodged and on enquiry about the car key, the man (Mathew) gave it to him, claiming that he saw it on the floor.

    “The attitude of the suspect made Mrs Odiachi pull off the mattress on the bed, but the suspect tried to stop her.

    “However, they noticed a tied wrapper containing some items and when it was loosened, it had three of Mr Odiachi’s pants, his wife’s bra and wrapper, which were wrapped in a black cellophane.”

    Our correspondent learnt that the suspect pleaded not to be exposed and reportedly offered Odiachi and his wife N10,000 to cover up the incident.

    The source said, “The police control room was contacted around 4am and a police team came to the guesthouse and took the suspect to the ‘A’ Division Police Station in Asaba. We are still at a loss on what the suspect intended to do with the underwear.”

    The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, could not be reached, as calls and messages sent to her phone were not replied as of the time of filing this report. ,,

    Tragedy As 81-year-old Man Is Murdered In His Farm in Delta

    There was palpable fear and tension in Owanta community, Ika Northeast Local Government area of Delta state after an 81-year-old father of eight identified as Johnson Ukpali was murdered.

    WITHIN NIGERIA gathered that the man was murdered by unknown assailants in his farm.

    Mr Godspower Ukpali, the first son of the deceased, who confirmed the incident to Ika Weekly Newspaper, revealed that his father left home in the morning of Tuesday January 19, 2021 for his usual tapping of palm wine in their farm at Owanta.

    Godspower said that his father didn’t return home so friends and family members gathered together and went to search for him.

    “On reaching the farm, particularly where he taps palm wine, we discovered that my father who left home early morning, hale and hearty had been killed and dumped beside a palm tree.” he narrated.

    Godspower is appealing to the government and the Delta State Police Command to help investigate the matter and bring the murderers of his father to book.

    He described his late father as a hero and man of the people.

    Gunmen suspected to be assassins killed a man identified as Emeke Ojere, at Ugbomro community in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta state.

    The father of three, who hails from Oyoko-Abavo in Ika South Local Government Area of the state but resides in Warri, was shot dead in his car on Saturday, January 30.

    One Mr Egbehon who drove the G-LK Mercedes Benz car told journalists that he was in the car with his “Oga” (the deceased) and another occupant when gunmen accosted them.

    Spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, who confirmed the incident to The Punch, said operatives are intensifying efforts to nab the fleeing gunmen.

    Starboy Fizzy, a budding music artiste based in Warri, has committed suicide over a cleric’s revelation that he planned to use his mother for rituals.

    According to a report by the Nation, the incident happened early Thursday in Alegbo area of Effurun, Uvwie council area of Delta state.

    He reportedly drank sniper, a poisonous substance.

    The incident reportedly occurred after he returned from a church vigil with his mother.

    According to reports, the young man decided to end his life because the pastor of the church allegedly told his mother that he saw a vision he would use her for money rituals.

    It was gathered the mother of the deceased had divulged the Pastor’s warning to her neighbours to the displeasure of the son.

    The upcoming artiste allegedly got depressed by the gossips making the rounds about the pastor’s revelation and chose to end it all.

    Checks on YouTube revealed the deceased had a music video titled “Fire,” with MBA records.

    Florence Owa, a 50-year-old mother of four has reportedly killed herself in Sapele, Delta State, by drinking a poisonous substance suspected to be Sniper.

    The sad occurrence happened at No 124 Ogbene Road on Tuesday, January 26, few days after she was discharged from the hospital.

    It was gathered that the deceased had been sick for some time and was at home recuperating when one of her children came back and found her unconscious in the sitting room.

    She was immediately rushed to the Sapele Central Hospital, where she was confirmed dead on arrival.

    A resident of the area disclosed that Florence popularly called Floxy had been battling depression since her illness started.

    Abducted DELSU SSANU chairman, driver regains freedom

    Abducted chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Delta State University, Abraka Branch, Comrade Monday Izu, has regained freedom.

    He was released alongside his driver six days after they were abducted along Eku-Abraka Road in Ethiope East Local Government Area while returning from an official assignment in Warri, Delta State.

    The gunmen had reportedly lurked around a failed portion of the road waiting for their targets.

    The kidnappers had earlier demanded N200 million for their freedom after establishing contact with their family members using the SSANU chairman’s mobile line.

    Families of the abductees were reportedly asked to part with N5 million.

    Although Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Delta Police Command, Onome Onovwakpoyeya, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), is yet to comment on the development.
