    Kano Govt seals hospital for violating COVID-19 protocols

    The Kano State Government has sealed a private hospital, UMC Zahir Hospital in Kano for treating sever cases of coronavirus, COVID-19.

    This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Kano by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Muhammad Garba.

    According to the Commissioner, the hospital was shutdown in accordance with the standard set by the state Task Force on COVID-19, which requireed such facility to attend only to mild cases of the disease.

    Garba said two confirmed patients with severe cases had died, one at the facility and another on the way to the hospital.

    He said two other patients with sever cases in the hospital have been evacuated to the state’s isolation centre for proper treatment.

    According to the statement, the facility would remain closed until the matter is resolved between the management and the state government.

    The Executive Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje has stated that there should be a law banning the movement of cattle from the north to the south.

    This statement was made by the Kano state governor while addressing journalists after he and All Progressives Congress (APC) governors met with President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina state.

    Ganduje said if the movement of cattle is not stopped, there will be no end to farmer-herder conflicts.

    The governor said his administration is already constructing a settlement for herders in a forest near Kano’s border with Katsina.

    He said the settlement will have houses, a dam, an artificial insemination centre, and a veterinary clinic.

    “We are building a Ruga settlement in Samsosua forest, our border with Katsina and we have succeeded in curtailing the effect of banditry in that area,” Ganduje said.

    “So, we are building many houses, we are constructing a dam; we are establishing a cattle artificial insemination centre, we are establishing a veterinary clinic and already we have started building houses for herdsmen.

    “My advocacy is that we should abolish the transportation or trekking of herdsmen from the northern part of Nigeria to the middle belt and to the southern part of Nigeria.

    “There should be a law that will ban, otherwise we cannot control the conflicts between herdsmen and farmers and cannot control the cattle rustling which is affecting us greatly.”

    Recall that former senator representing Kaduna central, Shehu Sani had also called for the setting up of grazing reserves in the north to end farmer-herder crisis.

    Kano to introduce COVID-19 marshals

    The Kano State Government is planning to appoint COVID-19 marshals to enforce safety protocols.

    Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje disclosed this on Saturday while meeting with journalists, at the Government House, Kano.

    He said there was the need to tackle COVID-19 with all seriousness, noting that non-compliance to safety protocols had been identified as a huge challenge to curbing the spread of the virus.

    Ganduje said the state government had held a meeting with relevant agencies to find a template on how the compliance would be enforced.

    “Enforcement of compliance with COVID-19 protocols would soon come up in the state. People should comply with the health of the citizenry.

    “The state task force on COVID-19 held a meeting with security agencies to embark on the enforcement to ensure that members of the society do comply for optimum result,” he said.

    The governor said that the vanguards would include security agencies, paramilitary and non-governmental organisations.

    He called on the mass media to continue to enlighten the public on the dangers of the pandemic.

    “We are very happy that you are cooperating with the state government in this fight,” he said.

    The governor, who also met with private school proprietors, urged them to complement government efforts in curbing the menace in their respective schools.

    Ganduje commended the proprietors for their cooperation so far.

    “We are very happy that you are cooperating with the state government in this fight, and we will give you all the support,” he added.

    A golf car conveying parcels of Indian Hemp worth over N30 million has been intercepted by the Kano State Road and Traffic Agency, KAROTA.

    This was contained in a statement released by the Spokesperson of the Agency, Nabulisi Abdullahi on Thursday, January 21 in Kano.

    Abdullahi said 172 parcels of the drugs was seized on Gwarzo-Kano road, adding that the driver of the vehicle has been arrested.

    “The operation which took place on Wednesday led to the arrest of the diver along Gwarzo Road while other suspects believed to be the owners of the consignment managed to escape,” the statement reads.

    “Preliminary investigation revealed a total of 172 parcels of the Indian Hemp worth N30 Million was being convened into the state.The Agency has however handed over the exhibits to the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA for further investigation,” he added.

    The Managing Director, Dr. Baffa Babba Dan’agundi has called on the general public to assist the agency with credible information that would lead to the arrest of any person or group of persons who engages in any form of crime in the state especially on the state roads.

    COVID-19: Kano bans viewing and event centres, directs civil servants to stay at home

    Kano state government has announced the imposition of a fresh ban on the activities of viewing and event centres across the state following increasing COVID-19 cases.

    The state commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, who made the revelation in a statement, said the measure was part of decision at a stakeholders meeting held at the Africa House, Kano on Monday.

    He said that all civil servants in the state have also been directed to stay at home pending further instruction.

    Malam Garba, however, explained that workers on essential services such as the healthcare service providers, fire service, water board, teaching staff, security guards and the media are exempted from the ban.

    The commissioner reaffirmed government’s commitment to working with relevant stakeholders that included the Ulama to ensuring compliance with the COVID-19 Protocols.

    He also warned that security agents who were part of the stakeholders meeting would not hesitate to take stern measures to ensure compliance with the directive.

    27-year-old Kabiru Bashir and 30-year-old Sadiq Ashiru who are natives of Danbatta LGA of Kano state have been arrested by the Katsina state police command for defrauding unsuspecting members of the public through phone calls posing as evil spirits.

    This was contained in a statement released by the spokesperson of the state police command, Gambo Isah.

    The PPRO said nemesis caught up with the suspects when they stole the ATM card of a lady identified as Rabi’atu Garba of Mani LGA of Katsina state.

    ”The suspects started calling her that they are spirits (AlJanu) and asked her to avail them with her ATM card PIN number.   The suspects deceitfully told her that they are about to bless her by sending one million naira to her account and directed her to go to her bank, UBA branch in Katsina and update her account.  She became suspicious and reported the matter at the Central Police Station, (CPS) Katsina.  In the course of investigation, the suspects were trailed and arrested.”the statement read.

    Isah said the suspects confessed to committing the offence and stated that they have defrauded several unsuspecting persons in the state through the same modus operandi.

    He said one white Honda Ham pane, with Chassis No. JHMGD173025215012, NSCDC ID card bearing one Kabiru Bashir, two (2) ATM cards, four (4) GSM handsets and the sum of one hundred and twenty-six (N126, 000:00K) were recovered from the suspects.

    Isah said they will be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

    25-year-old man to receive 12 strokes of cane for dealing in illicit drugs in Kano

    Umar Yahaya, 25, a resident of Fagge Quarters in Kano metropolis is to be flogged 12 strokes of cane and also pay a fine of N10,000 for dealing in hard drugs.

    The suspect was arrested on December 31, 2020 at about 7pm by a team of police officers attached to Fagge Division Kano. The defendant was in possession of 13 rubber solutions and two bottles of ‘suck and die’ suspected to be intoxicant.

    Yahaya who was convicted on two-count charge of public disturbances and possession of ‘rubber solution and ‘suck and die’ – narcotics, had pleaded guilty to the charges.

    Magistrate Mr Farouk Ibrahim who delivered the judgement, summarily convicted the defendant and pronounced a sentence of one month in jail or the option of a fine of N10,000 and award of 12 strokes of cane.

    JUST IN: Prominent Kano Politician, Bello Bayero is dead

    An elder statesman in Kano State, Bello Isah Bayero, is dead.

    Bayero, a strong ally of President Muhammadu Buhari and cousin to present Emir of Kano, Alhaji Bello Isa Bayero died Thursday night at the age of 87 at the Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) after a brief illness.

    He was the National Chairman, APC Supporters Movement and onetime Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

    Alhaji Bello was born into the Kano royal family; his father was a brother to the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

    He was a seasoned politician who held several positions in both the private and public sectors.

    The late Alhaji Bello Isa Bayero aspired a number of times to represent Kano Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly.

    Reacting, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, in a condolence message by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Abba Anwar, on Friday in Kano described Bayero’s death as a great loss, not only to his family but the state.

    He said, “We received, with the deepest shock, the death of Alhaji Bello Isah Bayero, who died when the state and the nation needed him the most.

    “He was a gentleman, whose political leadership helped in the restoration of our democracy.

    “As a gentleman, who trained many in many human endeavours, we missed him the most.

    “His death is a great loss to Nigerian democracy, our traditional institution and political leadership.

    “Bayero was an embodiment of humility, excellence, productivity, openness, transparency, accountability and that he was a father to the state and Nigerian democracy.

    “What remains for us now, is to pray for Allah’s forgiveness and blessings on his soul and seek Allah’s guidance to give us all the courage to bear this great loss.

    “On behalf of the government and people of Kano State, I am sending this condolence to his immediate families, our royal institution, friends and all other well-wishers of the late elder statesman, Bello Isa Bayero.’’

    Kano stops payment of N30k minimum wage, reverts to N18k

    The payment of N30,000 mininum wage to civil servants has been stopped by the Kano state government.

    It has now been reverted to the former N18,000 minimum wage.

    Spokesperson to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, Salihu Tanko-Yakasai said they reverted to the former minimum wage due to ‘COVID-19-induced recession’.

    He added that the state government can’t afford to pay the N30,000 minimum wage.

    Yakasai said;

    “The state government has reverted to the initial minimum pay due to the recession. What we are getting now as a government has reduced, and we can’t afford to pay the N30,000 minimum wage.”

    A civil servant who spoke to the publication, said they were not informed of the development.

    The source said;

    “We saw the deduction in our November and then December pay, and nobody told us anything. The pensioners also had deduction in their pay and no reason has been given for this.”

    Kano Police arrest notorious armed robbery suspects, recover riffle

    Two notorious armed robbery suspects, Aliyu Shuaibu Dille, 22, and Rabiu Muktar, 28, have been arrested by the police in Kano State. A Pump Action rifle was recovered.

    The suspects have long been on the police wanted list, police spokesman, Abdullahi Haruna who paraded them on Wednesday, said.

    Haruna, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said a team of Operation Puff Adder led by Yunusa Danzomo of Badawa Division, arrested the suspects during surveillance patrol in Badawa Quarters, Kano.

    During interrogation, the two-man syndicate confessed they have participated in series of armed robberies along Hadejia Road by Sheshe Super Market, Yankaba Quarters and Badawa Quarters, Kano.

    Dille said he deals in Indian hemp, with proceeds gotten from armed robbery operations.

    Kano State Commissioner of Police, Habu Sani, ordered that the case be transferred to the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for discreet probe.

    Police said the suspects will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
