Power Autos: Allegedly murdered in UNN

However, as Power Autos later attempted to leave the venue with his friends, they were ambushed within the UNN premises by the suspects, who blocked their path with three vehicles.

Sensing imminent danger, passengers in Power Autos’ car fled. He reportedly stepped out of his vehicle to assess the situation but was attacked and fatally stabbed repeatedly in the throat with a knife. He died instantly.

It was gathered that the attackers fled the scene, abandoning one of their vehicles in a gutter within the campus. UNN security swiftly raised an alarm, and the Chief Security Officer, Chris Alumona, ordered all campus exits be sealed.

WITHIN NIGERIA findings showed that as the suspects were attempting to escape through the Odenigwe Gate axis, four of them were apprehended. They are currently in custody at the Enugu State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), where investigations are ongoing.

UNN confirms the incident, gives new directives

On Monday, the Acting Public Relations Officer, UNN, Inya Agha Egwu, issued a statement,  condemning the killing.

Mr. Egwu assured that the University management remains fully committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all members of its community.

He however stated the management will continue to take every necessary measure to prevent a recurrence of such ugly incidents on the campus.

According to him, such activities must be strictly under the supervision of the University Security Unit.

The statement further reads thus; “the Management of the University of Nigeria wishes to inform the public of an unfortunate incident that occurred on Friday, 12th September 2025, during a bonfire night organised by students’ association of the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.

“The event was infiltrated by miscreants from a neighboring community, who instigated violence. In the course of the disturbance, a guest at the event, Mr. Chiebonam Nweze, was stabbed. Sadly, despite prompt efforts to save his life, he passed away before receiving medical attention at the University’s Medical Center.

“Investigations have confirmed that neither the deceased nor the assailants were students of the University of Nigeria.

“We wish to assure the public that the University Security Unit, working in close collaboration with the Anti-Cult Unit of the Nigeria Police, has successfully apprehended all those responsible for the tragic incident.

“The Management of the University of Nigeria expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Mr. Chiebonam Nweze and prays for comfort during this time of grief.

  • Inside Osun community where ‘evildoers’ hijack motorcycles, cut off riders’ body parts

Inside Osun community where ‘evildoers’ hijack motorcycles, cut off riders’ body parts

When a man in his early forties simply identified as Dare bade farewell to his lover on Sunday morning, the duo did not know that it would probably be the last time they would ever see.

ILESA – an ancient city in Osun is passing through one of its difficult moments. Some group of people have come together to secretly embark on an evil mission within the Ilesa metropolis. They lure Okada riders, hijack their motorcycles and cut off their heads or private parts.

This sad occurrence is not new. It was gathered that more than eight families have alerted the public about their missing relatives who are Okada riders.

This reporter also learnt that all these Okada riders have same tale – leaving home very early and went missing after some hours. And the case of Dare, a native of Efon-Alaaye seems not different.

His relatives and friends are still finding it extremely fearful over the sudden disappearance of this young man. Why did he leave his home? Was he abducted?

Was he murdered in cold blood? Was he a victim of domestic violence and committed suicide? These are questions people troubling peoples mind.

Close associates including neigbors have continued to express worry over this issue, wondering why a grown-up man would abandon his home, loved ones and everything he has ever worked for.

Dare, an Okada rider left his phones at home which made it almost impossible for his location to be tracked.

This reporter gathered that his relatives have reported the matter to the police but security operatives in charge of the matter have not recorded any success.

They have not made any arrest but family members of Dare, a native of Efon-Alaaye, a community in Ekiti State have not gone to bed over the issue.

Findings by WITHIN NIGERIA revealed that Dare who is a native of Efon-Alaaye is not the only missing Okada rider in Ilesa, an ancient community in Osun State.

There are almost eight reported cases of Okada riders who have gone missing too within the Ilesa metropolis. As at the time of filing this report, they have not been found.

A 40-year-old Okada rider identified as Ezekiel told this reporter that these missing Okada riders are likely victims of robbery.

According to Ezekiel, some young people armed with knives or weapons would ask Okada riders to take them to somewhere quiet, far just to hijack their motorcycles

Ezekiel while noting that such sad incident happens very early in the morning or at nightfall further stated that they focus more on new or fairly used motorcycles.

‘They firstly gather their information. They find ways to lure Okada riders and hijack their motorcycles. They injure them or kill any Okada rider that fights back’, he added.

CSP Martins, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ayeso via a telephone conversation with WITHIN NIGERIA confirmed that the relatives of one Ojo Oluwadare truly reported the incident to the police on Monday, 7th November.

‘We have informed all divisional offices within the state about the sudden disappearance. we have also forwarded his picture to necessary quarters. We believe that he would be found’, he told this reporter.

CSP Martins added that the police have not effected any arrest and the matter is still under investigation.

Another top police officer told WITHIN NIGERIA that there are similar cases of sudden disappearance of Okada riders within the Ilesa metropolis and environs.

“The incessant hijacking of new or fairly used motorcycles is now alarming. Okada riders should avoid taking people to strange places and ensure to always work at daylight. These are necessary safety procedures they must consider at the moment”

“We can only track a missing Okada rider if he has a phone with him. Even if they threw it away, we would still be able to track down his last location but most victims dropped their phones at home, the top police officer added.

A 42-year-old Okada rider who prefers to be anonymous told this reporter that two dead bodies of Okada riders have been found but they were not complete i.e some body parts like head and private parts were missing.

The man while attributing the evil acts to ritualists and internet fraudsters said only greedy Okada riders can be their victims.

‘When yahoo Boys give you N1000 as fee for a service that worth N200 and ask you to drop them at desired locations with higher amounts, be prepared to be used as sacrifices one day’, says a rather sad man.

The man also added that most Okada riders are now errand boys of yahoo Boys who are younger in age.

These yahoo Boys give them money to lure and enslave them. They raise them as chickens and roost them at the end. When a bikeman takes yahoo boys every where at every time, he should know that he can be used anytime, he added.

  • ANALYSIS: Cybercrime prevalent in schools, breeds other crimes including murder

ANALYSIS: Cybercrime prevalent in schools, breeds other crimes including murder

As cybercrime keeps increasing, especially in our tertiary institutions, Campus Life looked into the gross effects and how it has generated other crimes in the country. In this report, WITHIN NIGERIA highlighted how Nigerian students have been arrested and some jailed for a crime that is being celebrated in society and bred grievous crimes, including murder.

The spate of cybercrime in Nigeria

In 2021, Nigeria had 108.75 million internet users. The country is topping the table of internet users in Africa. This figure as provided by Statistica is projected to grow to 143.26 million internet users in 2026. The benefits of using the internet are enormous, however many have leveraged it to commit crimes and perpetuate all kinds of evils, cybercrime is majorly, popularly referred to as Yahoo Yahoo.

The ‘Yahoo-Yahoo’ business, formerly known as cyber fraud in Nigeria’s cybercrime law, is not a new phenomenon in the country. The illicit business, mostly perpetrated by young men and sometimes women, is an offshoot of the so-called ‘419’ business of the 1980s and 1990s.

The 419 code is derived from a section of the country’s Criminal Act Section 419 (Advance Fee Fraud) which frowns at obtaining money from people through pretense or impersonation, cheating, falsification, counterfeiting, forgery, and fraudulent representation of facts.

Cybercrime has become a worldwide phenomenon eating deep into the country. In a recent FBI report, Nigeria was ranked 16th globally among countries most affected by internet crime, a very worrisome figure.

Cybercriminals use technology to commit malicious activities on digital systems or networks with the intention of stealing sensitive company information or personal data and generating profit. They engage in fraudulent electronic mails, pornography, identity theft, hacking, cyber harassment, spamming, Automated Teller Machine spoofing, piracy, and phishing.

Some of these cybercriminals are high school graduates and even students. Many address themselves as ‘yahoo boys’ connoting their pride in engaging in this illicit act.

The rise of cybercriminals in our tertiary institutions

In 2021, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, disclosed that more than 2.1 million students are currently studying in Nigerian Universities.

Campus Life however discovered that several institutions in the country have turned into a residual place for these criminals, with more than 50 students arrested for different cyber crime involvement.

In March 2021, a final year student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Adigun Oladapo Oludele, was sentenced to one year in prison for offenses bordering on internet fraud. Properties recovered include a Lexus vehicle, phones, wristwatches, money; all these were forfeited to the federal government.

On July 27, 2021, a Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin Tuesday jailed three undergraduate students of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State University, and Kwara State Polytechnic to various jail terms having found them guilty of various offenses preferred against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The students convicted were Abubakar Abdulbashit Opeyemi, a final year student of the University of Ilorin, Alimi Abiodun, and Idowu Rasaq Olarewaju, who are students of the Kwara State University University, KWASU, Malete, and Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. These students were found guilty of offenses bordering on love scam and internet fraud.

In August 2020, The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday arrested four students of the University of Port Harcourt for their alleged involvement in Internet fraud. The students were identified to be Prince Hyacinth, Rex Emadifie Oghene, Odili Ifeanyi, and Uduak Williams.

On the 19th of September, 2021, Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), arrested 30 suspected cyber fraudsters in a sting operation at the Kwara State University, KWASU, Malete. Some not found culpable were later released. six exotic cars, several laptops, mobile phones, and other incriminating documents were recovered.

In October 2021, 29 Students of Ladoke Akintola University were arrested by the Economic Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) for cybercrimes. 25 LAUTECH students were equally arrested in 2019 for alleged internet fraud.

Also in Jan 2022, Justice Adenike Akinpelu of the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin has sentenced a 24-year-old student of the State University, Malete, KWASU, Alonge Toyib Alao, to one-year imprisonment for cybercrimes and possession of fraudulent funds.

In Feb 2022, Two students of the Kwara State University, (KWASU), Malete, Animasahun Rokeeb Mayowa, and Lawal Alamin Tewogbola were on Tuesday convicted and sentenced to various jail terms by Justice Adenike Akinpelu of the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin over offenses bordering on cyber fraud.

    …From cybercrime to Ritual killings

As this menace keeps increasing, cyber criminals have stepped up their game in search of illicit wealth. The “Yahoo Yahoo” business has degenerated to Ritual killings, cutting the head and other body parts of humans to make more money.

In Dec, 2021, a suspected ‘Yahoo boy’, simply identified as Osas, allegedly murdered his girlfriend, Elohor Oniorosa, for money ritual purposes. He was said to have slaughtered his girlfriend in Egor area of Benin metropolis.

In September, 2021, A female student of the Niger Delta University (NDU), Amassoma, Deborah Emafridom, was rescued from her suspected Yahoo boy lover, Sunday Favour Ojo, while he was attempting to behead her for money ritual purposes along Setraco Road in Ogobiri Community in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

Also in November, 2021, a student of Osun State Polytechnic Iree, identified as Wumi, died after being reportedly used for money ritual by her boyfriend. She was a National Diploma 1 student at the department of mass communication.

In September, 2021, a female student of the Niger Delta University (NDU), Ammasoma, Bayelsa State, was rescued from her lover boy, a suspected ritualist (Yahoo boy) who tried to behead her.

In January, 2022, Jennifer, a student of University of Jos, Plateau State was murdered on the eve of the New Year in Jos. The eyes of the deceased, which was buried, were removed and other parts mutilated by the suspect, her supposed boyfriend.

This menace is still increasing regardless.

    Students express views

Students across various institutions have shared their opinion on students’ involvement in cybercrime.

Agbaje Temilade, a student of Tasued, knocked parents for not paying attention to their children. She also attributed it to peer pressure

“Most times it is peer pressure, the type of friends they move with, wanting what others have which is lack of contentment. Sometimes parents can be a causing factor. Parents send their wards off to school without proper preparations like provisions. I have seen someone who scouts throughout her entire time in the university. Parents also pressure kids comparing them to their mate, asking when they would start making money. Social media is also a adding factor to cybercrime” she said

Oluwapelumi Olagija, a student of Ekiti state university said the feeling of independence led students to be involved in cybercrime.

“I hate assumptions but I strongly believe being responsible got them into this whole thing. They wanted to take responsibility without being pressured, it’s not easy to be a male child. I’m not saying cyber crime is good but limited resources trigger a high number of them to be involved in cybercrime.”

Ogunleye Ayomide of Abraham Adesanya polytechnic, said students see cybercrime as the easiest way to fend for themselves, which makes them involved in it.

“We know it is a criminal offense to engage in cyber crime, but on the contrary why do we think they do it? I feel like things are not so cool in this country and they feel like the easiest way to fend for themselves and family is doing that, most students doing it in tertiary institutions are footing their own bills their parents can’t even afford to send them to school. It is bad but it seems to be a source of help to most of them”

A recent graduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Oshoniyi Mojetoluwa, said that students engage in cybercrime due to lack of contentment.

“People do it for many reasons, some do it due to lack of contentment and peer pressure. Although I know a couple of people who engage in it, I even have friends among them. It’s not good and it has consequences too. They want more, and after getting it, they ask for more. If big money is obtained illegally, you will always seek illegal ways to earn more.” She said

Authorities not doing enough to end cybercrime

A Lagos based lawyer, Festus Ogun, said there is no will on the part of the authorities to put an end to cybercrime. Festus opined that cybercrime has endangered the future of the country and youths who engage in cybercrime are “on a lone path to destruction”

“There is no will on the part of the authorities partly because those who should implement the law themselves ought to be put on trial for financial and other cyber related crimes. Cybercrime further exposes the future of our country to danger. A country whose youths take pride in cybercrimes, in place of hard work, is on a lone path to destruction.”

“The chunk of the duty lies with the authorities. And the authorities, for plethora reasons, are indeed not committed to putting an end to cyber crimes in this country”

He said that school management can go ahead to make policies, rules and regulations that are in tandem with the cybercrime act 2015, connoting their commitment to end cybercrime in schools and in the country.

“Absolutely, school management can go ahead to make policies, rules and regulations that are in tandem with the cybercrime act 2015. That shows that they are equally showing commitments to put an end to cybercrime in this country. If we do not, as a matter of national urgency, put an end to cybercrime, then the future of our country is in peril” he said

A mother of four identified as Fatima Hamza has been remanded in prison custody by a magistrate court in Kano state for allegedly killing her 16-year-old housemaid.

Recall that the suspect, Fatima was arrested after she was accused of beating the late Khadija Rabiu to a pulp and inserting dried pepper and metal object in her vagina for not doing the house chores she was instructed to do.

The late Khadijat who is a native of Kwara State reportedly died as a result of injuries she sustained from the beating.

According to her co-housemaid  Khadija died as a result of injuries she sustained from the beating. But Khadija later retracted her statement.

The Magistrate Court No 8 sitting in Gyadi-Gyadi area of the state metropolis on Monday, ordered that Hamza be remanded in a correctional centre for murder.

The State Counsel, Barrister Asma’u Ado, told the court that the woman was brought before the court on a one-count charge of culpable homicide, which contradicts section 224 of Penal Code Law.

The accused person pleaded not guilty.

Her counsel, Barrister Ibrahim Abdullahi Chedi applied for bail on health ground, noting that the accused had a miscarriage while in police detention and her baby was also not feeling fine.

“We have a medical report from the Police Headquarters Medical Centre as our client had a miscarriage as a result of shock. And as a nursing mother, her daughter is also sick so we are seeking bail so that our client can have access to a facility for better medical care,” he said.

But the state counsel objected to the application on the grounds that the medical report did not indicate a specific illness that the accused person was suffering from “apart from the miscarriage, which she will recover from as she continues taking her drugs”.

The presiding Judge, Chief Magistrate Ibrahim Khalil Mahmood, thereafter ordered that the accused person be remanded in a correctional centre and adjourned the case to February 16 for ruling on the bail application.

According to him, Gbenga reported at the Onipanu Divisional Headquarters that his son was alleged to have stolen two phones by the suspects, consequent upon which they jointly beat him to a state of unconsciousness.

The PPRO said, “He (Gbenga) stated further that the deceased was rushed to the General Hospital, Ota for medical attention, but was pronounced dead as soon as he got to the hospital by the doctor on duty.

“Upon the report, the DPO, Onipanu Division, CSP Bamidele Job, led his detectives to the scene where the three suspects were quickly arrested.

“It was the quick response of the police that saved the suspects from being lynched by an angry mob, who gathered to apply jungle justice on them immediately they heard that the victim was dead.”

He added that the corpse of the deceased had been deposited in the mortuary of the General Hospital, Ota, for post-mortem examination.

The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and diligent prosecution.

Oyeyemi added, “The CP warned that the command would not tolerate any form of jungle justice on anybody suspected of any type of crime.

“He appealed to members of public to always report anyone suspected to have committed crime to the law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and prosecution rather than taking the law into their own hands.”
