NDLEA arrest Graduate who sponsored his education with proceeds from Marijuana business

Southern City News learnt that Austine, said to be a graduate of Geophysics at the Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, was arrested by NDLEA operatives in Iyeu-Otua community following a tip-off.

Armed personnel from the state command of the agency were said to have stormed the residence of the suspect on Ohiomah Street, where 82 bags of dried weeds, weighing 762 kilogrammes, were discovered.

The NDLEA Commandant in Edo State, Mr. Buba Wakawa, confirmed Austine’s arrest on Monday, adding that the recovered weed tested positive for cannabis sativa.

Wakawa said the 82 bags of dried weeds were recovered from inside the ceiling of the suspect’s apartment.

He said, “The suspect was arrested at his residence in Otuo based on intelligence report. During a search operation, officers discovered 82 bags of cannabis sativa concealed inside the ceiling of his house with a total weight of 762kgs.”

Austine claimed that financial constraint pushed him into marijuana peddling as an undergraduate in 2011.

“I studied Geophysics at the Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, and completed my National Youth Service Corps (programme) in January, 2018. I started selling cannabis in 2011 when I gained admission into the university. This was because I had no one to help me financially.

“After my graduation, I stopped selling cannabis; but the temptation arose when I purchased a form for my Masters degree programme at the University of Port Harcourt.

“It was circumstances that made me to deal in it (cannabis) and this is the largest quantity of cannabis I have bought at a time. Please, I need help because there is nobody I can turn to in life for assistance,” Austine said.

But Wakawa said Austine’s excuse was not tenable, vowing that he would be charged to court.

He noted, “This is a criminal act that is punishable by the NDLEA Act. It is unjustifiable to engage in the criminal act under any pretext.

“A preliminary investigation uncovered that the suspect bought the drugs during the harvest season and stored it in the ceiling for sale during the peak season. Further investigative activities have been concluded for the suspect to be arraigned in court soon.”

  • NDLEA raises the alarm over cannabis cultivation in Edo

NDLEA raises the alarm over cannabis cultivation in Edo

The NSCDC Commandant in Benin, Mr. Wakawa Buba, disclosed this at a press conference to review the activities and achievements of the agency in Benin.

Buba explained that statistics from the different local government areas showed that the rate of cultivation was alarming.

According to him, about 33 cannabis farms across the state, measuring 49.06 hectares, were traced and destroyed in 2017.

The figure, he said, increased by 11.18 hectares, when compared to the 37.87 hectares destroyed in 2016, adding that a total of 45,341.04 kilogrammes of the substance were seized.

Buba said, “Intelligence report from the above statistics has shown that the problem of cannabis cultivation in the state is alarming.

“Thus, the diversion of arable land to cannabis cultivation remains a serious threat to food production. The large-scale production of cannabis has led to the widespread abuse of the drugs among the youths, especially school-age children.

“Apart from dropping out of school, use of children as cheap labour in cannabis plantations and drug-induced mental illness, most criminal acts are perpetrated under the influence of drugs. These include robbery, kidnapping, cultism, murder and rape, among others.”

The NDLEA commandant also lamented that the consumption of illicit drugs increased during the year under review, adding that while 58 drug dependants were recorded in 2016, the number increased to 168 in 2017.

He, however, gave an assurance that the agency would continue to adopt effective measures to financially incapacitate drug traffickers, through drug seizures, confiscation of assets, cannabis farm destruction and detection of drug warehouses.

He added, “In view of the growing number of young persons involved in substance abuse, the command will intensify efforts in school-based campaign this year. This will help in reducing demands for drugs in the state.

“Subject to the availability of funds, the command will construct a modern cottage rehabilitation centre to mitigate the problem of drug dependency.”
