Senator Abbo defends himself after he’s caught on tape slapping someone else

Senator Elisha Abbo (APC, Adamawa North) has reacted after he was caught on tape slapping someone else.

The Adamawa-born senator who was caught on tape In May of 2019, dishing out slaps on a hapless young woman inside a sex toy shop in Abuja, is in the news again for assault.

Abbo has earned for himself a reputation for beating up and slapping people on a whim.

A video clip of the senator slapping yet another person in a yet-to-be-ascertained location, has been making the rounds online.

The incident occurred in November of 2020.

“You are very stupid,” the 42-year-old senator can be heard yelling in the clip as tempers flared. Before long, he was raining more slaps on the hapless victim.

The audience was reportedly made up of members of Abbo’s constituency.

Around the senator who was perched in his car, invectives and cuss words in the local dialect, punctuated the still night air.

Abbo has tried to explain the incident away by saying all he did was disarm a young man who was hell bent on shooting at him if he refused to part with the sum of N2 million.

Abbo and his reps maintain that he acted in self defense and that he was the victim on the night.

A statement sent to newsmen by Abbo’s reps details that the senator “disarmed a man with a pistol made locally, who threatened to shoot him if he did not give him two million Naira before crossing the blocked road.

“On November 13, 2020 at around 2am, the man led dozens of young people and blocked the senator on his way to his cousin’s wedding in Mubi.

“The incident was an attempt on the senator’s life by the man holding the dane gun, unlike a trending video on many social media platforms published with no verification or obtaining the facts; used by the opposition as venom to poison the mind of good people of the nation.”

The senator worries that the spate of unemployment in Nigeria is a “serious problem that must be resolved quickly by the government” before it spirals out of control.

He also blames poverty and other social ills for the “rascally conduct of young people these days.”

“Most of the youths are pushed into this, wasting their talents by doing something bad to the detriment of themselves and the society at large,” Abbo said.

He added that “that young man was deliberate in attacking me with his dane gun. Idleness and poverty are eating deep into the fabric and mental wellbeing of the youth in our society. It is harshly biting them hard and I must try my best to take them out of that mess.

“Come this Saturday, I will go back to my constituency to have a self-sustained empowerment program of millions of naira to help them regain their freedom from poverty.”

The senator has also blamed his political opponents for the circulation of his latest assault video, explaining that he is being antagonized for recently dumping the opposition PDP for the governing APC.

Abbo recently appealed the judgement of a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court which ordered him to pay the sum of N50 million as compensation to Osimibibra Warmate after he assaulted her in that sex toy shop in Abuja a little over a year ago.

The senator argues that the N50 million sum is excessive and a disproportionate penalty for his offence.

Abbo is Nigeria’s youngest senator. A reputation for being a hothead has preceded him since he assumed the position of a federal lawmaker.

Sex Toy Shop Assault: Court Strikes Out Suit Against Senator Abbo

Senator Elisha Abbo, Adamawa-North lawmaker, who was caught on camera assaulting a woman inside a Sex toy shop in Abuja, has won the case of assault instituted against him before a Magistrate Court in Zuba, Abuja by the Nigeria Police Force, newsmen reports.

This is despite a viral video showing Abbo assaulting a woman, Osimibibra Warmate; and a televised press conference in which the lawmaker apologised to the victim.

According to a copy of the judgment obtained by The PUNCH, the Magistrate, Abdullahi Ilelah, who upheld a no-case submission filed by Abbo, said the police failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the lawmaker assaulted Warmate on May 11, 2019.

The case with suit number CR/010/2019 spanned from July 8, 2019, till June 18, 2020.

The two witnesses that testified against Abbo were Warmate – who was the nominal complainant – and a police officer, ASP Mary Daniel, who investigated the matter.

In her testimony, Warmate said she had gone to visit a friend, Kemi, at Pleasure Chest Sex Toy Shop, Banex Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja on May 11, 2019 when the lawmaker walked in with three women.

She said suddenly, one of the women that accompanied Abbo started vomiting and later fainted.

Warmate said when she left the shop, she received a frantic call from Kemi asking her to come to her aid as the lawmaker had accused her of putting something in the shop’s air conditioner system that caused one of his female companions to vomit and was threatening to get her arrested.

The victim said when she returned to the shop and was cleaning up the vomit, two men, one of whom was a policeman in uniform, barged into the shop.

She said Abbo told them to arrest Kemi for insulting him but Kemi began pleading and then picked up her phone to tell her father that she was being arrested.

Warmate added, “As one of the men moved to take the phone, I begged him and said it was her father that she was talking to. Then the defendant (Abbo) pounced on me, punched me on my face and in the eye. He slapped me several times and asked me why I interfered.

“He said he would make me a scapegoat for interfering and asked the two men to arrest me. The defendant (Abbo) pulled me by the hair and pushed me downstairs and to a car. I called my mother and I was being arrested.

“While in the car, the people on the premises told the defendant (Abbo) that he needed to report to the police on the premises before he could leave but the defendant (Abbo) refused and the security guards in the plaza had to lock the gate.”

Warmate said her mother was able to intervene and after much pleading, she was let go by Abbo.

The victim said she began to feel severe pains in her body due to the beating and she went to a private hospital, Mega Eyesight, and also reported the matter to the police.

Under cross-examination, Warmate admitted that she was not a nursing mother at the time of the incident as widely reported.

She also stated that she was not the one who recorded the video of the incident but obtained it from the owner of the shop where the incident occurred.

Warmate also stated that the video presented as evidence was an abridged version of everything that transpired on the day of the incident.

The second witness, who is a police officer, told the court that she took statements from the victim, the senator and two others who witnessed the incident including Alaba Udeme, the mother of the victim.

The policewoman said because the shop where the incident took place remained close, she could not access the CCTV and had to rely on a disc given to her by the victim.

The video of the incident, a separate video of Abbo’s public apology and a report signed by one Dr. Amobrose Ibegbule, who treated the victim, were tendered as evidence.

However, when the prosecution rested its case, Abbo did not open his defence but filed a no-case submission, asking the court to dismiss the charges preferred against him.

In his ruling, the magistrate Ilelah said, “The evidence and exhibits tendered do not disclose a prima facie case of the alleged crime of criminal force and assault against the defendant (Abbo).

“The prosecution’s case centred on the oral evidence of PW1 (Warmate) and the two discs contained a CCTV footage of the incident and alleged video clip of an apology from the defendant (Abbo).”

He said the medical report of Mega Sight Eye Clinic did not disclose in detail what happened to the victim and Dr. Ambrose Ibegbule who wrote the report was not called as a witness.

The court said the video of the press conference showing Senator Abbo apologising was not tantamount to an admission of guilt as it wasn’t a confessional statement.

Ilelah said the testimony of the victim was “so weak because the allegation has not been substantiated in any material particular.”

The court said the police did not do a proper investigation as it relied solely on the statement of the victim.

The magistrate stated, “The IPO (Investigating Police Officer) did not investigate this case at all or she just charged the defendant to court via the F.I.R (First Information Report) without due care and attention. In fact, she has succeeded in creating a doubt in the mind of this court during cross-examination and the Supreme Court held that where there is a doubt in a criminal trial, such doubt should be resolved in favour of the defendant.”

He said the court would rely on the law and not logic or media reports because he who alleges must prove.

“The defendant is hereby discharged under Section 303(3)(c) and (d) of the ACJA 2015,” the magistrate said.

The unfolding drama that arose after Emeka Rollas, the president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria AGN, made Senator Elisha Abbo a patron of the guild, is still on the rise as it has led to a dispute between the president  and a follower.

Emeka, yasterday, asked one of his followers on Instagram to ” go and die” after she inquired when he would drop controversial Senator Elisha Abbo who currently has a case in court for attacking a woman at a sex shop in Abuja last year,as a patron of the guild.

His appointment as patron of AGN has been opposed by veteran actors Hilda Dokubo and Kate Henshaw, over the said assault case.

However, in his defense, Emeka Rollas, stated that since the Senator has come out to apologies for slapping a staff at a sex store, there is no need to bring up the issue again.

The Northern Chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria has threatened to split from the association if the appointment of Senator Elisha Abbo as the patron is withdrawn.

The Adamawa-born lawmaker was recently enlisted as a patron of the guild, though this has led to controversy as some actresses called for the reversal of the decision.

Though the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas, has come out to defend the decision, some actresses are still criticizing the move.

Chairman of the Adamawa state chapter of the AGN, Jimi Lot, has now voiced his view on the whole controversy, stressing that the lawmaker, Elisha Abbo was appointed as a patron of the group because of his philanthropic acts.

    Jimi who told Daily Post that Abbo has apologised and should not be held down or delisted by the AGN, averred that northern actors will dump the AGN and form their own group if the act is carried out. According to him, Abbo is not guilty of assault until proven so by the court. He said;

“Even Jesus forgives so why wouldn’t Nigerians accept Senator Abbo’s apologies and forgive him over the assault.

“The guild is not going to withdraw the appointment. We the northern actors will not agree on this and will not take this if the guild tries to do otherwise.

“If they attempt to do that, we are going to secede. The northern actors will break up from the guild and form our own in the North, since our choice cannot be respected.”

Hilda Dokubo who called for delistment of Senator Elisha Abbo from AGN’s list of patrons, insisted that every attempt at rubbishing societal values with such appointment must be stopped.

    She wrote;

    Cut the crap

An abuser of women as Patron of Actors Guild of Nigeria is an unpardonable abuse of the rights of all the females in the creative space especially #actors.

We must stop every attempt at rubbishing our values as a people with such appointments in whatever guise. Consequently, Senator Abbo #sextoysenator must be delisted from our list of Patrons now.

Assault: Absence of Sen Abbo, prosecution counsel stall trial in Zuba Court

The absence of Sen. Elisha Abbo, who allegedly assaulted a nursing mother and the prosecution counsel, on Thursday stalled continuation of trial in a Zuba Chief Magistrates’ Court, in Abuja.

NAN reports that Abbo who represents Adamawa North Senatorial Zone was arraigned on July 8, 2019 for allegedly assaulting a nursing mother, Mrs Warmate Osimibibra.

At the resumed hearing, the police counsel, James Idachaba, and the defendant, (Sen. Abbo) were not in Court.

However, one Philip Tumba from the legal department of the FCT Police command told the court that, the prosecution counsel was attending a meeting with the Inspector-General of Police.

Tumba also said there was a letter of adjournment from the police which was filed at the court registry yesterday (Wednesday) but not served on the defence.

Similarly, the defense counsel Mr Isaac Adeniyi apologised for the absence of the defendant adding that he had health challenges.

Adeniyi, who did not object to the prosecution’s request for adjournment, said the dates suggested by the prosecution were not convenient to him.

‘We won’t disclose outcome of our investigations against Senator Elisha Abbo’ — Senate

Senate has disclosed that the outcome of its investigation against Adamawa lawmaker, Elisha Abbo who was caught on camera assaulting a woman in a sex toy shop in Abuja would not be made public.

This disclosure was made by the Senate spokesperson, Godiya Akwashiki while addressing journalists after plenary on Thursday, December 12th.

Akwashiki said that “I know vividly when that issue was brought to the plenary under matters of urgent importance, a senator raised an observation saying this issue is in a court of law. It’s not an issue we should disturb ourselves over.

“Please, I want to speak like a lawmaker. Once an issue is in a court of law, there is a limit for us to discuss it in the plenary.”

It was further learnt that “Akwashiki rationalised the Senate’s delay in debating the report, section 88 of the Constitution, which empowers the National Assembly to investigate allegations of misconduct against members and there was no such restriction.

According to reports, an investigation by the legislative arm, the section states, could be over the conduct of any “person, authority, or government body that has the duty of executing or administering laws enacted by the National Assembly.”

Although such investigations cannot be aimed to punish, the section states that it shall only be either to “make laws with respect to any matter within its legislative competence and correct any defects in existing laws” or “expose corruption, inefficiency or waste in the execution or administration of laws within its legislative competence”.
