FACT-CHECK: Did Isa Pantami Cry Over APC Gombe Governorship Ticket Snub?

CLAIM: A viral TikTok video claims former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, broke down in tears after being excluded from the APC’s 2027 Gombe governorship consensus arrangement.

    BACKGROUND

    What the video shows:

    The clip has two sections:

Pantami appeared to sob in front of a microphone.

Two men raising another man’s hand in solidarity (Image attached).

Captions attached to the video which was posted on social media alleged that it happened after Pantami was dropped from the APC governorship race for Gombe State in 2027.

Recall that Pantami had picked up nomination forms but withdrew on Tuesday, citing violations of the Electoral Act 2026 and a lack of communication from the party ahead of the May 21 primary.

The APC had named Jamilu Gwamna as its consensus candidate.

    FINDINGS

WITHIN NIGERIA analysed the video and discovered that the video is real, but old and out of context. The team traced the video to April 1, 2024.

In the original video posted on Pantami’s own social media, he was crying during an Islamic teaching session. The crying incident occurred in a sub-5-minute sermon, not a political reaction.

WITHIN NIGERIA discovered that two unrelated events were stitched together. The viral video emerged from the 2024 sermon clip with separate image showing the endorsement of Gwamna by Gov. Inuwa Yahaya and other APC stakeholders.

The endorsement image was overlaid on the left side of the video to create a false connection.

    VERDICT

    Misleading.

The video of Pantami’s shedding tears is genuine, but the footage is from 2024 and unrelated to the APC governorship process. The caption linking the video to his exclusion from the 2027 race is false.

VIDEO: Footage Of How ISIS No. 2 Abu-Bilal al-Minuki Was Killed

The U.S. Africa Command released footage of a coordinated military operation that killed senior Islamic State leader Abu-Bilal al-Minuki and other top ISIS figures.

In a statement issued Saturday, May 16, 2026, AFRICOM said the strike was carried out under the direction of the U.S. President and the Secretary of Defense, in coordination with the Nigerian government.

U.S. and Nigerian officials confirmed al-Minuki’s death, identifying him as ISIS’s second-in-command globally.

Al-Minuki, born in Borno State, Nigeria, rose through extremist ranks to become a key link between ISIS central leadership and its affiliates in Africa.

Al-Minuki coordinated operations across West Africa and the Sahel and wielded significant influence within the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, due to his strategic role and hardline position.

  • FACT CHECK: Misleading video claims to show 2026 Japan earthquake; footage is 2 years old

FACT CHECK: Misleading video claims to show 2026 Japan earthquake; footage is 2 years old

CLAIM: A dashcam video circulating on social media on April 20, 2026 shows “chaos in Japan after a massive 7.4-magnitude earthquake,” with falling debris as tremors shake the street.

    VERIFICATION

The video is real but miscaptioned and outdated. The dashcam footage was captured in Anamizu, Ishikawa Prefecture during the Noto Peninsula Earthquake on January 1, 2024, not April 2026.

Japanese media outlets like the Yomiuri Shimbun and social welfare corporation Chojukai posted it in Jan–Feb 2024. The earthquake with a magnitude 7.6 event that killed at least 168 people in central Japan.

However, Japan witnessed earthquake off the northeastern coast on April 20, 2026. JMA initially reported 7.5, later revised to 7.7. It triggered tsunami warnings and 80cm waves, but caused no major damage or reported casualties.

    VERDICT

The video is authentic footage from the January 1, 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake. Reposting it as evidence of the April 20, 2026 earthquake is misleading. The April 20 quake was real, but this video is unrelated and it is miscaptioned.

  • FACT-CHECK: Did Youths Attack Federal Lawmaker For Defecting to APC in Zamfara?

FACT-CHECK: Did Youths Attack Federal Lawmaker For Defecting to APC in Zamfara?

    CLAIM

Facebook posts alleged that a viral video shows a federal lawmaker being attacked in Zamfara after defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    BACKGROUND

As the 2027 general election approaches, political defections have increased.

Notably, on March 31, 2026, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced that 27 lawmakers had defected to the ruling APC and the African Democratic Congress.

Subsequently, multiple Facebook pages circulated a video purporting to show a PDP federal lawmaker attacked in Zamfara after defecting to the APC and endorsing President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.

The video depicts a crowd stoning a man while police attempt to intervene.

    VERIFICATION

However, when our team conducted a Google reverse image search, we found the video first surfaced online in December 2025 — months before the announced defections.

Furthermore, the individual in the video was identified as Kabiru Mikailu, a member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly representing Maru South constituency, not a federal lawmaker.

In addition, reports indicate residents of Dansadau town attacked him over alleged “poor performance” in office.

Lastly, as of this report, Mikailu remains a member of the PDP and has not defected to the APC.

    VERDICT

Therefore, the claim is false, misleading, and untrue.

While the video itself is authentic, it has been taken out of context: it shows a state lawmaker being confronted by constituents over performance issues, not a federal lawmaker attacked for defecting to the APC.

VIDEO: Texas residents line-up to fetch water from borehole amid power outage

Residents of Texas have been seen in a viral video lining up to fetch water amid days of blackout in the state occasioned by failure in natural gas operations.

According to operators, the bulk of the power loss in Texas came from natural gas suppliers as pipelines froze, making it difficult for plants to get the fuel they needed.

Electricity is normally used to pump water into the homes of residents but since the outage, many have resorted to seeking alternative ways of accessing their daily needs.

In a video shared online by ABC reporter, Erica Simon, citizens could be seen in a queue holding buckets and dispenser containers as they fetched water from a borehole tap.

    Sharing the video, Erica Simon wrote;

This is not a third world country. This is Houston, Texas. I spotted a line of people filing up buckets of water from a spicket at Haden Park. Why? Millions either have no water or are under a Boil Water Advisory.

  • VIDEO: Davido’s aide Isreal tenders public apology to DJ Cuppy

VIDEO: Davido’s aide Isreal tenders public apology to DJ Cuppy

Isreal Afeare, an aide to popular entertainer Davido, has tendered a public apology to Nigerian disc jockey Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, professionally known as DJ Cuppy.

Isreal tendered the apology after DJ Cuppy’s lawyers demanded an apology from him over his claim that Zlatan didn’t make any money from the hit song, ‘Gelato’.

This came after Cuppy took to Twitter to reveal that Zlatan has blocked her on WhatsApp and Instagram for over 10 months.

Israel who is Davido’s logistics manager and friend to Zlatan, then revealed what allegedly went wrong between Cuppy and Zlatan.

He alleged that Zlatan didn’t make a dime from working with Cuppy and that Zlatan was left to fund his bills after Cuppy invited him to Abuja for her fundraiser.

The allegation led to several backlashes, as Nigerians dragged Cuppy for being stingy and greedy.

However, DJ Cuppy accused Isreal DMW of defamation of character and launched legal proceedings against him.

The billionaire daughter also demanded a letter of undertaking to cease and desist from publishing these allegations or similar allegations and also compensation or further actions will be taken against him.

Isreal has now taken to his page where he made the allegation to apologise to DJ Cuppy.
