An NGO has demanded a safe space and protection for women and girls

Save Our Heritage Initiative (SOHI), an NGO, called on Thursday for the establishment of safe spaces and protection for women and girls in IDP camps.

Ms May Ikokwu, Chief Executive Officer of SOHI, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which is observed annually to commemorate the abolition of violence against women.

According to Ikokwu, women and girls are subjected to inhumane treatment in camps, including rape, movement restrictions, physical abuse, and denial of access to food.

“Women constitute more than half of Nigeria’s IDP population.” They are forced to live on less than $780 (US $1.90) per day, according to the UN.

“Their livelihoods are largely reliant on charitable and government organizations’ goodwill donations.”

“As a result of overlapping vulnerabilities related to economic security and protection, many people find themselves at risk of sexual and gender-based violence in the camps,” she explained.

Ikwoku condemned all forms of violence against women and girls and urged all states to domesticate the ‘Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP)’ in order to put an end to violence against them.

Rapists are sentenced to 12 years in prison without the option of a fine under the VAPP Act, according to her.

According to Ikokwu, if domesticated by states, the law has the potential to reduce the rate of violence against women and girls, particularly in IDP camps.

“Many women and girls have been coerced into sex for food in many conflict areas and camps as a result of intimidation, harassment, and a lack of food.”

“This practice is not only inhumane, but it is total violence against women and girls, and it must be stopped with the collaboration of state and non-state actors.”

Ikokwu emphasized the importance of treating women and girls with respect and dignity as mothers and future mothers in order to build a better and safer society.

“Living in IDP camps is extremely harmful to anyone. The government must step up efforts to end internal conflicts that force people to flee their homes and seek refuge in IDP camps.
