The Lateefa Moyosore Durosinmi Foundation (LMDF), an NGO, distributed N1.33 million in scholarships and grants to schoolchildren and impoverished women in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Wednesday.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the beneficiaries included 42 students from public schools and 28 underprivileged women in the area.
According to NAN, each of the students received N15,000 toward their education, while each of the women received a N25,000 grant to support their petty trading.
Dr. Lateefa Durosinmi, President of the Foundation, stated that she was motivated by the poor condition of the majority of children attending public primary and secondary schools in tattered uniforms.
“It is the LMDF’s hope that these modest efforts will go a long way toward alleviating the agonizing effect of the beneficiaries’ basic economic inadequacies,” said Durosinmi, former Dean of Students Affairs at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU).
Dr. Omotayo Zubair, the Guest Speaker, stated in his speech titled “Education: Panacea for Political & Economic Development,” that education was the solution to the nation’s economic and political challenges.
He urged the Federal Government to prioritize education in order to reduce the country’s unemployment problem and give hope to the youth.
The event’s chairman, retired Justice Kunle Adeigbe, praised the foundation for its good deed in assisting the needy and urged everyone to support the initiative in order for the exercise to continue.
Prof. Lateef Abass, Head, Islamic and Arabic Studies, University of Ibadan, Prof. Olubola Babalola, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) OAU, Alhaji Tayo Giwa, Agbaakin of Iwo land, and his wife, Alhaja Lateefat Giwa, Commissioner for Human Resources and Capacity Development, Osun State, were among the dignitaries in attendance..
