Romi Cohen of Israel defeated Ozi-oiza Yakubu of Nigeria 6-0, 7-5 on Thursday to advance to the singles semi-finals of the ongoing J5 World Tennis Championships in Abuja.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the match was played as part of the second leg of the ITF Tennis World Tour J5 Abuja, which began on November 24 and is scheduled to end on November 28 at the tennis complex of the Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
Cohen expressed her delight at the victory to NAN. “My performance was better than the week before; I worked and fought hard to earn this victory.”
“Beating my opponent was a difficult task. “My goal is to reach the tournament’s finals,” she stated.
“I did a good calculation, and I’m hoping to win the trophy this time.” I’ll do my best to hit my target.”
Cohen stated that she would devote time to perfecting her tactics for Friday’s semi-final match in the singles category against either Ohunene Yakubu of Nigeria or Joody Elkady of Egypt.
Ohunene Yakubu advanced to the semifinals of the female singles competition by defeating Rebecca Ekpenyong 6-1, 6-1.
Lucky Danjuma of Nigeria defeated Marshall Hulett of South Africa 6-3, 6-4 in the male singles round of 16, while Mukhtar Andu of the United Kingdom defeated Desmond Ayaaba of Ghana 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
In another match played in the male doubles category, South Africans Daniel Crowie and Marshall Hulett defeated Nigeria’s Jibril Adamu and Isaac Danjuma 7-5, 6-3 in the round of 16.
In the round of 16, Emmanuel Jebutu and Chika Nwaozuzu of the United States defeated Fortune Joseph and Yassine Mahmah of Morocco 6-3, 6-1.
The championships feature 45 players from Nigeria (host), Canada, the United States, Israel, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana, and South Africa.
According to NAN, the J5 ITF World Tennis Tour, which began on November 24, will conclude on Sunday, November 28.
