As part of malaria control efforts, the Buji Local Government Council of Jigawa has announced that it will conduct a fumigation exercise across its ten wards to rid the council of mosquitos.
Alhaji Abdullahi Sulaiman, Chairman of the Council, stated this on Sunday after inspecting the ongoing distribution of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) in the area.
Sulaiman, who spoke at Madabe village, said the gesture complemented the state government’s and other partners’ efforts to reduce malaria prevalence.
He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to improving healthcare in the area.
Sulaiman, who pledged to protect the people of the area from all diseases, urged the beneficiaries, particularly women and children, to protect themselves against malaria by owning and using mosquito nets.
The mayor also urged them to keep their surroundings clean at all times in order to avoid contact with the vectors that carry the malaria parasite.
Alhaji Musa Gambo, the area’s Head of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), also spoke, urging residents to sleep inside mosquito nets every night to protect themselves from mosquitos.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Jigawa government has begun the distribution of 3.7 million ITNs in the state in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Malaria Consortium, and National Malaria Elimination Program (NMEP).
NAN also reports that the Federal Government has made the use of ITNs one of the primary strategies for malaria prevention and elimination in the country.
