Bassey Eno-Ita, 24, a final year Science Education student, was arrested with 69 wraps of hard drugs suspected to be marijuana by the University of Calabar’s internal security.
The suspect was also apprehended with a number of cigarette packets in her possession.
The institution’s acting chief security officer, retired SP Usani Okon-Etim, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Calabar that 17 pupils were also arrested on the spot while eating the hard substances.
Okon-Etim stated that the suspect and the students were apprehended behind the Centre for Educational Studies building, in a popular area known as “Cameroon,” near the river.
“Today, we arrested a final-year student who sells hard drugs to students that are thought to be Indian hemp.” She was apprehended with 69 drug wraps and various cigarette packets.
“The area where the students and suspects were apprehended is extremely dangerous for kidnapping.”
“The university administration has issued several warnings to students to refrain from using drugs on campus, but to no avail.”
“After we have presented the matter to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, the students will face a departmental trial and a disciplinary committee.”
“In accordance with the Vice Chancellor’s directive to clean up the campus of illicit drugs, cultism, and rape, we are determined to make this institution a model for learning, teaching, and character formation,” he said.
He warned students at the institution not to use hard drugs on campus, saying that doing so could jeopardize their future and lead to expulsion.
