Bishop Stephen Adegbite, Lagos State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), stated on Monday in Lagos that Nigeria should adopt rotational presidency as a convention.
According to Adegbite, the agreement will save the polity from undue political pressures that tend to heat up the system during elections.
He made the submissions while receiving a courtesy visit from members of the Association of Religion Reporters.
The Methodist bishop urged political actors to follow in the footsteps of CAN’s leadership arrangement, which had fostered peace through zoning.
“If the political elite, and thus political parties, support zoning, the unhealthy rivalries that pit one ethnic or political zone against the other will fade.”
“We need to find a way to reduce the stress associated with electioneering.”
“To stabilize the economy and cater to the nation’s teeming unemployed youth, we should focus more on things that unite us through good governance,” he said.
Adegbite expressed regret that responsive leadership had eluded the country for far too long, resulting in avoidable social deformities such as kidnapping, banditry, and unemployment.
He, on the other hand, urged Nigerians not to lose hope in their country.
Adegbite urged Nigerians to keep praying for the country and its leaders in order to receive divine guidance.
