The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has provided relief goods worth millions of naira to windstorm victims in Aguleri, Anambra.
NEMA provided 300 bags of parboiled rice, 300 bags of maize, 300 bags of beans, 40 kegs of vegetable oil, and 25 cartons of seasoning cube.
Major James Eze, the NEMA South-East Coordinator, stated in a statement issued on Wednesday in Enugu that the distribution was carried out by NEMA, Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (ANSEMA), and other community stakeholders.
According to Eze, the distribution began on Saturday, Nov. 27 at Father Joseph Memorial High School in Aguleri.
He stated that during the flag-off, the Director-General of NEMA, Mr Ahmed Habib, expressed the Federal Government’s heartfelt condolences to the victims.
The coordinator stated that Habib, on the other hand, emphasized the importance of planting trees around buildings because they serve as windbreaks against strong winds.
The Federal Government and NEMA commended the efforts of community members in repairing some of the buildings damaged by the windstorm.
“These items provided by the Federal Government through NEMA will go a long way in assisting those affected to stabilize and move on in life,” the director general said, according to him.
According to the coordinator, the approval of relief items to people affected by the windstorm disaster in various villages of the Aguleri community was done on April 11, 2021, after a thorough assessment of the extent of damage caused by the windstorm.
Chief Anthony Omazu, President-General of the Aguleri community, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and NEMA for remembering and assisting the community during such a difficult time.
Omazu praised the NEMA Zonal Office for quickly assessing the affected areas during the unfortunate incident, and as a result, Omazu recommended relief assistance for the affected people to mitigate the effects of the windstorm disaster.
Mrs Chinyere Okeke, one of the recipients of the items, thanked the Federal Government and NEMA for bringing relief to her family after the windstorm destroyed most of the economic trees on which her family had been surviving.
“I appreciate the Federal Government’s goodwill gesture through NEMA, and these items will go a long way toward alleviating the hardship that my family has been experiencing since the April incident,” Okeke said.
Chief Obi Nnetuanya, Mr Chuks Kwazu (Ward Chairman), Mrs Munachi Okika (Woman Leader), Mrs Kwazu Ekene, and Mrs Theresa Okafor were among those who saw the distribution ceremony from the community.
Mr Emeka Obinwanne, Representative of the Executive Secretary of ANSEMA, and Mr Chukwudi Onyejekwe, ANSEMA Board Member, were among those on the ANSEMA team.
