The Niger Delta Youth Council (NDYC) has urged the government to seek justice for Sylvester Oromoni Jnr., a Dowen College student from Lekki, Lagos, who was reported dead.
On Sunday in Abuja, the group issued a statement jointly signed by NDYC National Coordinator, Mr EJator Abido, and Mr Collins Achakpekri, Director for International Relations.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Oromoni was reported dead on Wednesday, December 1, by a Twitter user named @perrisonoromoni, who claimed to be the deceased’s cousin.
According to @perrisonoromoni, the deceased was bullied and beaten by his classmates, which resulted in his death.
Dowen College, on the other hand, denied all allegations in a statement, claiming that Oromoni only complained of body pains from football.
To ensure the safety of pupils and students, the group advocated for stricter government regulations in public and private schools.
According to the council, the alleged heinous incident that resulted in the death of Sylvester Oromoni Jr. could be happening in other schools as well.
The group promised to work with relevant security agencies to identify school administrators who jeopardized the safety of their students and pupils.
“We were shocked to learn of the incident that resulted in the death of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromono Jnr.
“We join other well-meaning people in condemning the incident and calling for the punishment of those found to be responsible for the unfortunate act.”
“We would like to make an appeal for a comprehensive solution to the issue of children’s safety in schools.”
The youths of the Niger Delta also urged the government to reconsider the requirements for school operators.
“As a council, we will take on the responsibility of monitoring and exposing such evil acts that endanger the health and lives of children.”
“We also appeal to community leaders, religious leaders, and every concerned citizen to join us in making schools safe for children.”
