The National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS) on Thursday urged the state government to prohibit the movement of articulated vehicles during the day in order to reduce accidents and the ongoing loss of life.
This is stated in a joint statement issued by Mr Shasanya Akinola, President of NULASS, and Mr Hassan Abdulsalam, the union’s Public Relations Officer.
NULASS condemned a Tuesday accident in which an articulated vehicle collided with students from Babs Fafunwa Millennium Junior and Senior School in the state’s Ojodu Berger area.
The vehicle struck and killed students on their way home from school.
The union is saddened by the development, which has left affected families and Lagosians in mourning, according to the statement.
“It is disheartening that we have lost some future leaders of this state and the nation as a result of the articulated vehicle colliding with and killing some of our students.”
“We are in deep mourning because our young and vibrant talents, who were on the verge of bringing glory to the state and the nation, were suddenly taken away.”
“While we pray for God’s intervention to put an end to every type of evil in our land, we earnestly appeal to the Lagos State government to ban the movement of articulated vehicles during the day,” the union declared.
It was noted that Mr Akinlola expressed condolences to the victims’ families, the school’s administration and students, and Lagos State as a whole.
Akinlola expressed hope that Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu would respond quickly to the appeal as part of efforts to put an end to such accidents.
“May the souls of those who perished in the accident rest in peace,” said the statement.
