Researchers discover new endangered plant species in SW China

Some Chinese researchers have uncovered a new plant species of endangered orchids in southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

This was made public on Wednesday by the Wuhan Botanical Garden (WBG), which is under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The report revealed that the new species, Ponerorchis wolongensi, named after the Wolong National Nature Reserve, where it was first found in July 2020, has white flowers.

Details surrounding the new discovery are available in the Nordic Journal of Botany.

The Ponerorchis wolongensi is the second new orchid species discovered by the WBG in Sichuan this year, as they had earlier discovered a new orchid species named Corallorhiza sinensis.

With various terrains, including mountains, plateaus and basins, the province is rich in biodiversity.

The orchid family, as the second-largest family of angiosperms, has about 28,000 species worldwide and was listed as endangered plant species.

They were widely distributed in various terrestrial ecosystems, said the WBG.
