The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) announced the 13th Ebola outbreak in its northeastern region of North Kivu to be over on Thursday.
Since the outbreak was declared on October 8, 2021, 11 cases have been reported, with six deaths in the Beni region of North Kivu.
The outbreak was brought under control in about two months after it was declared, thanks to the experience of the DRC’s response team and its health partners, according to DRC’s health minister Jean-Jacques Mbungani.
In early May, the DRC declared the end of the 12th Ebola outbreak, which had also been reported in North Kivu province, with a total of 12 cases, including six deaths.
The cases were genetically linked to the 2018-2020 outbreak in eastern DRC, which killed over 2,200 people and was the second deadliest on record.
