On Saturday, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Tin Can Island command confirmed the interception of a container suspected of being loaded with arms and ammunition.
Mr Uche Ejesieme, the command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the interception in a statement.
According to Ejesieme, the container was intercepted on Friday during routine inspection in one of the port’s terminals.
“In response to this development, the command notified the terminal operators and requested that the suspected container be transferred to our enforcement unit for a thorough examination.”
“This suffices to say that the information is still sketchy, but we hope that comprehensive information will be available following the 100% examination.”
“Following that, in accordance with service protocol, we will communicate officially to customs management as well as our zonal coordinator,” he said.
As a result, he appealed for calm as the command sought critical information on which to base a report on the incident.
