The Imo chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), has called on law enforcement agencies in Imo to arrest and prosecute Mr Ikenna Egbujor, a popular Heartland FC supporter, for assaulting Mr Solomon Onu, a member SWAN.
Chairman of the association, Mr Everest Ezihe, made the call in a press statement issued on Monday in Owerri where he urged the Commissioner of Police to ensure that Egbujor is brought to book.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Egbujor, also known as (Agwu), allegedly attacked Mr Solomon Onu, Heartland FC Media Officer, at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, after a home match between Heartland FC and Nassarawa United.
The media officer became unconscious immediately after the attack but was later revived by some medical personnel, while the culprit fled the scene immediately.
Following the development, the state Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Dan Agu, banned the notorious Heartland FC fan from attending matches and directed the club’s General Manager, Promise Nwachukwu, to communicate the decision to Imo Football Association.
However, Ezihe said only when the suspect was arrested and prosecuted would the victims feel a sense of justice.
He said the arrest would serve as an example for other violent fans of the club.
Ezihe also appealed to the state government to enhance security at the stadium during the club’s home games, while also appealing to the government to pay off medical bills of the victim as he was attacked during a service to the state.
