In continuation of the traditional and spiritual events of the ongoing annual Igue festival, the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba Ewuare II, performed Ugie-Otue (Oba’s rite) on Thursday in his palace.
Ugie Otue (Oba ceremony) is a rite that provides numerous opportunities for various palace chiefs, functionaries, and guilds to pay homage and declare undivided allegiance to the Oba.
Significantly, the rite also allows palace chiefs and functionaries to receive kolanuts gifts from the Oba in recognition of their commitment and loyalty over the years, based on their endowments or hierarchical order.
The “Ifiento” (palace warriors), “Ikpema” (Royal Drummers), and the Emelhe (ancient royal praise singers) provided spiritual rendition in accordance with customs at Thursday’s ceremony.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), those in attendance strictly followed COVID-19 safety protocols.
