The Chairman, Bwari Area Council, Mr. John Gabaya, has promised to improve on agricultural productivity within the area among other services, if re-elected in the Feb. 12, FCT council elections.
Gabaya made the promise on Wednesday while addressing some native women and youths of the Sabon-Gari area of Bwari town during his campaign in Abuja.
The chairman is seeking for re-election under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
He said that improving productivity as well as livelihood of farmers was in line with the Federal Government’s policy of revamping agricultural sector for food sufficiency.
The chairman noted that agriculture remained a major contributor to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.
Gabaya recalled that in 2021, his administration bought and distributed fertilizers and other farm input to farmers and promised to do it again this year.
He also said that his administration would continue in its plan to sensitize and empower women and youths on agricultural technology and skill acquisition.
“Last year we were able to start some of these plans; we also carried out sensitization of farmers on dry season farming techniques, causes of post-harvest losses, and how to mitigate it.
“We also carried out sensitisation and empowerment of farmers on yam miniset technique in order to promote quality seed yam production and multiplication.”
“These and more are all we intend to continue to do for the good people in our council area this year and beyond if re-elected,” the chairman said.
He added that a contract had already been awarded for the reconstruction of Bwari Slaughter House with a review to improve the safety and quality of meat for human consumption.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the chairman had during the council’s 2022 budget presentation on Friday said that his administration had made a lot of achievements across every sector in the last two years.
“You recall that in 2021 we identified key projects capable of transforming the lives of the people and improving the economy of the council.
“The projects included the rehabilitation of rural and township roads and the construction and rehabilitation of Primary Health Centres.
“I am happy to inform you that based on the resources we have accomplished a lot to that effect,” he said.
