FG tasked to deploy high-tech security system to beat kidnappers

A former official of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Douglas Ogbankwa, has called for combination of local intelligence and high-tech security system in tackling kidnapping and related crimes for more efficiency.

Ogbakwa, a former Publicity Secretary of the NBA, Benin Branch, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) following the abduction of three lawyers of the Warri Branch of the NBA.

NAN reports that kidnappers had on Wednesday attacked commuters on the Benin-Auchi Road, taking away three lawyers and a driver.

The lawyers were said to be on their way from Warri to Sabo-gidda Ora High Court, when they were attacked at Ehor.

Ogbakwa, also a rights activist, regretted the rising spate of abduction in Nigeria, urging that the country would need a high-tech security system to tackle violent crimes.

“The spate of such an ill is highly condemnable, and this calls for an enhanced security architecture to protect the lives and property of citizens.

“Safety of Nigerians should be properly guaranteed in this light by a security network that is largely technology-driven.

“We must be willing and ready to deploy technology to tackle such a crime.

“Some of these criminals are high-tech, using night vision,  network disruptors, turai phones and walkie talkie.

“I, therefore, recommend that  there be a corresponding deployment of tech security outfits, such as drones, armoured personnel carriers, helicopter gun, ships, bullet-proof vests and other modern crime-fighting equipment.

“It is also important to use local intelligence to out-smart these criminals, as they operate within a local environment,” he said.

He urged security operatives to do their best to ensure release of the lawyers and bring their abductors to book.
