Nasarawa United Football Club were held to a 1-1 by visiting Sunshine Stars of Akure on Sunday in a 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Match Day 12 fixture.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the fixture played at the Lafia Township stadium saw the away side taking the lead in the third minute through Ugochukwu Leonard.
However, Nasarawa United equalised in the 41st minute through Lawal Shehu.
Despite being the home team, Nasarawa United were outplayed in all departments by Sunshine Stars who failed to convert their chances.
Nasarawa United’s performance left several of the home fans bewildered and speechless, after many of them had before kickoff expected a comfortable home win.
It was not unexpected then that after the match ended, the hosts’ supporters moved closer to the pitch to express their anger.
They shouted obscenities at several members of the club’s management, led by club chairman Isaac Danladi, forcing them to make a quick exit from the stadium.
Speaking to newsmen after the match, Deji Ayeni, Head Coach of Sunshine Stars, praised his players for adhering to their plan.
According to Ayeni, his team performed well by frustrating the attacking efforts of their opponents in the final minutes of the encounter.
“I told my players that if Enyimba can come to our backyard and get the three points, nothing stops us from coming to Lafia to do the same and they picked on that.
“And we almost got the three points because the second goal we scored was to me a fantastic goal, even though it was cancelled. But be as it may, we leave it to human error.
“Nevertheless our tactics really worked for us. Our players adhered with our instructions and approached the game with the focus of getting a goal in the early minutes of the game and they did.
“I thank the players for listening and performing according to the instructions,” Ayeni said.
