A professor in the Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Yusuf Dankofa, on Saturday said that poor in family values was responsible for Social and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in the country.
Dankofa disclosed this at a webinar organised by the National Association of Seadogs, Pyrates Confraternity, Panama Deck, as part of activities for its Feast of Barracuda.
The professor, who spoke on the topic, “Cost, Consequences and Effects of Gender Based Violence”, said that there was need for family re-orientation.
He said that there was need to promote gender violence discourse and rules of engagement.
The don said it was time that men saw women as partners and understand that their wives were not meant to be exploited.
“Let’s create a family where the women will grow in love; where women are not seen as sex objects.
“When women are seen in the family as partners, that is when we will have a free society,” he said.
Dankofa said that forced marriages in Africa lead to SGBV and that enough attention was hardly paid to women empowerment.
“The fact that there is large poverty in Africa, women are hardly empowered and girls seeking for marriage and protection become more vulnerable to exploitation,” he said.
“Marriage is all about offer and acceptance. People marry those they are not supposed to marry for different reasons,” he said.
