Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced the establishment of a special committee on possible economic and security consequences of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, media reported on Wednesday.
“The boycott of oil and gas marks a tectonic change and the consequences will lead to predictable difficulties in the short term. Albania is no exception,” Rama said, as quoted by the Pan-European media network Euractiv.’’
The committee is set to estimate the possible impact of the situation in Ukraine and anti-Russian sanctions on Albania, according to the media network.
The politician compared the situation around Ukraine to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are in the same conditions as with the pandemic when we did not know the duration, developments, and dynamics and we had to prepare for some scenarios,’’ the media network reported.
On Feb. 24, Russia began a military operation in Ukraine, responding to calls for help from the breakaway republics Donetsk and Luhansk in countering the aggression of Ukrainian troops.
The Russian Defence Ministry said the operation is targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure only.
Moscow has said that it has no plans to occupy Ukraine.
