Malam Sani Abdullahi, the Chairman of Pottery Makers in Kano State, has urged the state government to provide them with permanent clay excavation sites, to boost their businesses.
Abdullahi made this known while speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, in Wudil, headquarters of Wudil local government.
He explained that they had trained many people on the craft, which, he said, they inherited from their ancestors over 100 years ago.
The chairman revealed that some people still use clay pots for cooking, water storage and as flower-stands for house and office decorations, among others.
Abdullahi said that the sites they get clay were part of farmlands that belonged to individuals.
According to him, the owners of such places often eject them at will, which affected their operations.
“We are therefore calling on the state government to assist us with sites for excavation of clay.
“Anytime we were ejected, we had to suspend production until we get an alternative place,” he decried.
He further said that allocating permanent places for them at the outskirts of towns would enable them to burn the potteries and prepare them for use without problem.
According to him, this would also go a long way in protecting people’s health, particularly those who are asthmatic or having sight problems.
