The University of Lagos, (UniLag) Akoka male football team on Tuesday defeated Adamawa State University, 2-0 to progress to the quarterfinals of the ongoing Nigeria University Games (NUGA).
UNILAG booked a place in the quarterfinals courtesy of a two first half goals from Kehinde Salami and Doyin Omotosho.
The host team went into the game full of confidence as their supporters were on hand to cheer them to victory.
However, Adamawa State University male team ensured the game was not a one team affair as they put up an impressive performance.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN), the captain of UNILAG male team, Joshua Okorie, stated that he was delighted about the victory.
“We are very happy to be back in our winning ways as we took the first game against University of Ibadan, 1-0 and unfortunately lost to Kogi State University in second group game.
“Indeed, we had to work hard to win this match because we know how important it is to us as we have only one thing on our mind, which is winning the gold medal.at the end,”Okorie said.
Following the heels of the male football team, the UNILAG female football team also have been impressive in the tournament, as they crushed Bayero University Kano, 7-0 to book their ticket.
The team had beaten University of Ibadan, 4-0 in their first game and played 1-1 draw with Federal University of Technogy, Minna, before edging past BUK.
The Head Coach of the female football team, Diana Ajaine, told NAN that they were in the competition to win the gold medal.
“We are arguably the best team in the competition, we would stop at nothing to win the gold medal, we know it’s going to be tough because all other teams too are aiming for that prize.
“With determination and strong mental discipline and good team work, we would surely achieve our set desires,” Ajaine said.
