Alhaji Mukhtar Gidado, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has disbursed N1 million scholarships to 100 indigent students in the state. Gidado said this at the inauguration of the disbursement exercise on Tuesday in Alkaleri, Alkaleri Local Government Area of the state.
He said the gesture was to promote education and complement government efforts toward reinvigorating the education sector.
The governor’s aid said the beneficiaries were drawn from Alkaleri LGA, adding that each of them would receive N10,000 to encourage them in their educational pursuit.
The gesture, he said, was part of a personal contribution aimed at promoting education in the area by encouraging the students, saying the scope of the programme would be expanded to enhance participation.
“The beneficiaries are carefully selected from Alkaleri, Bwana, Duguri, Pali, Gar, Gwaram, and Gokaru wards in the area,” he said
Gidado also presented two motorcycles to some members of the community for their contribution to the successful implementation of government policies and programmes.
He said that Gov. Bala Moh’amned’s administration had achi9 remarkable progress in infrastructure development, especially in education, health, roads, security, and water supply.
Earlier, Yusuf Garba, Chairman, Alkaleri LGC, lauded the gesture, saying it would contribute to the sustainable development of education in the state.
He urged the beneficiaries to dedicate themselves to their studies to achieve academic excellence.
Garba admonished the students to shun drug abuse and vices as well as be good ambassadors for their families.
Mr. Walid Sunusi, President of Alkaleri Local Government Students Association (ALSAN), commended the gesture, adding that it would motivate the students to dedicate themselves to their studies.
Also, Fatima Yakubu, one of the beneficiaries described the gesture as timely, saying it would positively impact their lives considering the harsh economic realities.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the beneficiaries are drawn from various tertiary institutions of learning across the country.
