The Enugu State House of Assembly has passed the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS) bill.
The passage of the bill followed by the report presented by the House Committee Chairman on Education, Mr James Akadu, on Tuesday in Enugu.
It would be recalled the leader of the House, Mr Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, had during for second reading of the bill said the establishment of SUMAS is as a result of the inability of the state government to relocate Parklane Hospital to Igbo-Eno.
Ezeugwu noted that the government considered that relocating the Parklane ESUT Teaching Hospital would be tantamount to creating a problem while trying to solve another one.
The House leader argued that establishing the university would create room for more students to gain admission into medical-related courses and also improve doctor-to-patients relationship which he said is abysmal in Nigeria.
While describing it as a win-win situation, Ezeugwu, representing Udenu constituency, hinted that Enugu state needs more medical tertiary institutions that would cater for the health needs of the people.
Another member of the House, Mr Chinedu Nwamba, stressed that the establishment of SUMAS would be helpful in making more medical personnel available.
Nwamba, representing Nsukka East constituency, pointed out that SUMAS, when functional, would accommodate more students doing their Housemanship, create employment opportunities as well as train needed medical capacity for the state.
In his remark after the passage of the bill, the Speaker of the House, Chief Edward Ubosi, explained that the establishment of SUMAS would create jobs as well as provide necessary medical manpower for the state.
Ubosi asked the state government to provide needed resources for the take off of academic activities of the institution and thanked his colleagues for their contributions in ensuring that the bill was passed.
The House thereafter adjourned its plenary to April 21, for further legislative activities.
