A 58-year-old man, Godwin Paul, on Thursday appeared before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly defrauding his brother of N5.2 million.
Paul, who resides at Television Area of Kaduna, was charged with fraud.
The prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that one Godwin Simeon, a brother to the defendant, reported the matter at the Gabasawa Divisional Police Station on March 20.
According to Leo, the complainant asked the defendants to help him sell four plots of land located at Kujama Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna state.
The prosecutor said that the defendant fraudulently converted the sum of N5.2 million, being the proceeds from the sales of the plots of the land belonging to the complainant, to his personal use.
He said that when the complainant discovered that the defendant had sold the land, he asked for the money, but the defendant refused to give him the money.
Leo said that the offences contravened Section 97 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Chief Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Emmanuel said the sureties must reside and own a landed property within the court’s jurisdiction, and must depose to an affidavit of means.
He also said that the sureties and the defendant must deposit two passport photographs with the court’s registrar as well as the defendant’s passport.
He adjourned the case until June 24, for hearing
