German prosecutors have asked Russia for help in tracking down former Wirecard executive and fugitive Jan Marsalek, according to a report on Tuesday in tabloid newspaper Bild.
According to the report, prosecutors from Munich sent a detention request to their Russian counterparts in the last week, requesting Marsalek’s detention and extradition to Germany.
The newspaper cited government sources.
Allegedly, the request included the name of the community to which Marsalek had fled. Munich prosecutors declined to comment when asked about the report.
Marsalek disappeared in mid-2020 as it became clear that Wirecard’s finances were a shambles, after months of allegations of accounting fraud by its managers.
At the time the company sought insolvency, it said that about 1.9 billion euros (2.05 billion dollars) on its books could not be accounted for.
