The Ogun government on Monday said that it would impose sanctions on learners in Public primary and secondary schools who failed to resume on the approved date for the beginning of the third term.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu said this while monitoring the resumption for the third term in some schools in Abeokuta, the state capital.
Arigbabu said that learners who were absent on the first day of the term would be required to write formally to give reasons for their absence.
According to him, anyone with tenable reasons will be considered and pardoned, while those that were absent intentionally would be sanctioned.
He added that a welcome test would be one of the prerequisites for the third term learners’ promotion to another class, urging the learners to always take their studies seriously.
“I want to tell you that I am impressed at the turnout of our learners for the new term, though some of them are absent and did not write the welcome test, which will form part of their continuous assessment. This will invariably affect their marks at the end of the term,” the commissioner said.
Arigbabu called on parents to continually support the government’s efforts toward ensuring discipline, thereby promoting academic excellence in schools.
In their separate remarks, the Principal of Baptist Boys High School (Senior), Saje, Mr. Oluseyi Kushimo, and Mrs. Opeoluwa Odunaya, his counterpart at Ilugun High School (Senior), said learners who resumed today in their schools wrote the welcome test.
They said that all their teachers resumed punctually to school and were ready to perform their duties optimally.
Among the schools visited by the commissioner and his team were Abeokuta Grammar School, Idi-Aba, Baptist Boys’ High School, Saje and Ilugun High School, Ilugun.
Others were Saje High School, Saje, Unity High School, Ago-Ika, and Abeokuta Girls’ Grammar School, all in Abeokuta metropolis.
