Germany set to allow anti-aircraft tanks to be sent to Ukraine

Germany has promised to send anti-aircraft tanks directly to Ukraine, dpa has learned.

This is a change in policy for a country that had come under criticism for not sending heavier weaponry to fend off Russia’s invasion of its neighbor.

Under the plan, weapons company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann would get permission to send Cheetah anti-aircraft cannon tanks, known as Gepards in German, to Ukraine.

It would construct them out of parts and tanks already owned by Germany’s Bundeswehr.

Modifications were possible. The company had dozens of the tanks on hand.

A formal announcement is expected in Berlin later on Tuesday.
