The longest serving member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Canadian Richard Pound, and Hungary’s Pal Schmitt were on Friday elected as IOC honorary members.
Pound, 80, was an Olympic swimmer at the Rome 1960 Games and has been an IOC member since 1978.
He served two terms on the executive board from 1987 to 1991 and 1992 to 1996 and then became the first president of the World Anti-Doping Agency from 1999 to 2007.
Schmitt, 80, won fencing team gold medals in 1968 at Mexico City and 1972 in Munich.
He joined the IOC in 1983 and was vice-president for one term from 1995 to 1999, and was later also president of Hungary from 2010 to 2012.
Both were elected as honorary members unanimously by the IOC Session.
Former Spanish basketball great Pau Gasol was meanwhile elected into the IOC ethics commission until 2026.
