Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, matriculated about 4,000 students on Saturday.
The vice-chancellor, Prof Chigozie Ogbu, warned the new students against examination malpractice and vices capable of destroying their future.
“I urge you to always remember why you are in the university. Your parents have tried to give you the opportunity to develop yourselves and be useful to the society.
“Do not misguide yourselves about your mission in the university. You are all First Class graduate materials, but what you get depends on how you apply yourself and your time, and the company you keep.
“If you focus on your study and you are of good character, you will achieve your goal.
“If you come here to socialise and join groups that are not useful to your mission, then you will miss your way,’’ he said.
The vice-chancellor cautioned the matriculating students about possible antics of older students to intimidate them into joining groups and admonished them to shun such pressure.
“You are not here to join social clubs. Develop your character and integrity and report to the management when you are under any pressure.
“Do not engage in examination malpractice so you don’t get sent out of the university,’’ the vice-chancellor stressed.
