Democracy Day: Computer group urges better ICT delivery

The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Lagos chapter, has called for improved Information and Communication Technology (ICT) delivery in the country.

The chairman, Mr Olakunle Oladipupo, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.

Oladipupo said that there were so many challenges hindering the seamless delivery of ICT  in the country hence the need for improved delivery.

The chairman said that government should work on our power supply in order to foster ICT development.

According to him, for the Nigerian ICT sector to witness progress, not only in application but also in invention and development, power supply must be stable.

‘’It is heart breaking that Nigeria still battles the problem of epileptic power supply up till now.

‘’The poor power supply also contributes to the high cost of ICT establishment; ICT does not only include mobile phones, television, softwares, hardwares nor telephones.

‘’It extends to the very complicated ones like robots, networks like our telecoms, drones etc; the cost of setting up any of these is high.”

According to him putting the telecommunications sector into consideration, you will find out that these companies have branches and mast scattered everywhere in the country.

He said that such facilities needed no little amount of money to establish and maintain.

Oladipupo said that although Nigeria was recording an improvement in the level of computer literacy, it still had not made up for the inadequacy in computer skilled labour.

The chairman highlighted solutions that would improve ICT in the country.

He said companies should educate their workers on the trends of ICT, while seminars and overseas programmes for ICT should be considered.

He said that people should be careful on how they supplied their information to websites and social apps to avoid breach of privacy.

Oladipupo said that children should not be allowed to access the internet and if they must, it should be done under adult surveillance.

Aderogba Adeoye, Executive Secretary, Information Technology Systems Security Professionals (ITSSP), also emphasised on the need for adequate power supply for improved ICT delivery.

Adeoye said that lack of adequate power supply had contributed to the high cost of ICT in the country which should be urgently looked into before the next democracy day celebration.
